Being a fairly frequent patron at Rock cottage branch with outstanding service and never had a bad experience I assumed the service levels would be the same at this branch.
Firstly, hogs is know for its higher grade tequila options. Out of stock on all tequilas with an excuse that the supplier is out of stock, for 5 days. . I'm sorry, as a manager/owner be proactive enough to pop over the road to pnp and go by a bottle or 3 tequila while wait for stock. Our group have previously left establishments because of not selling tequila. None the less, we let it go and moved on with our stay. Our purpose for the day out together at hogs was to knock back a couple of tequilas
Secondly, now for the really disappointing part, the food. I have ordered the hogs "award" winning burger with all my previous visits at rock cottage branch and hard to find a better burger in jhb , this was the driving factor as to why we came to hogs, was purely for a good decent burger and tequila . The burger literally came with 1 piece of caramelized onion (the main topping).
Upon requesting the manager it had taken Jeff 8 min to arrive to look into my complaint, by then my food was cold and the rest of my group was nearly done with their meals. I expected more considering this is a franchise/chain as there are obvious standards to uphold as a franchisee.
None the less, I won't be back at this branch, would recommend to any clients to drive 5kms down the road and get top notch service from the Rock cottage branch.
Rant over - PS, Jeff's management skills are extremely poor from what I gathered during our encounter. No wonder the kitchen staff and staff in general are below mediocre.
Not one to complain easily, but I am disappointed, will keep my hogs visits to Rock...
Read moreI visited Hogshead Douglasdale on 19 September 2025 around 7:30 PM with a friend, intending to enjoy a meal and some drinks. However, I was rudely denied entry by the bouncer due to the sleeveless shirt I was wearing.
What struck me as inconsistent was that several female patrons were being admitted while wearing sleeveless tops. When I questioned the bouncer about this apparent double standard, his response was, “Are you a lady?”
This interaction left me questioning whether Hogshead Douglasdale enforces sexist policies or tolerates discriminatory behavior from staff. I’ve been a frequent customer in the past, but after this experience, I have no intention of returning.
If this establishment intends to position itself as an upmarket venue, it should begin by training its staff to conduct themselves professionally.
Management has failed to adequately address this issue, simply stating that vests are not permitted after 6 p.m. However, as mentioned above, I was wearing a smart, high-quality sleeveless shirt—not a vest. Furthermore, female patrons were allowed entry wearing sleeveless tops, suggesting a double standard in the dress code policy and poor professionalism from the bouncer. The enforcement of such inconsistent rules raises concerns about the establishment’s...
Read moreOur waitress was great. She was attentive and honestly did her best.
We were watching the second half of the Nottingham vs Brighton match up. It took all of the second half including about 5 mins of extra time (total of 50 mins) to get our food.
Food was great.
Service was slow and sloppy. Even for drinks. Again, our waitress was great.
But so many staff just sat around just before their shifts. Drinking, eating and just chilling while she tried to do her best.
Pathetic attitude from her colleagues. I've lived in GP for over a year now. From Durbs. Waxy O Connors in KZN is so much better strictly because all staff cover for one another.
I live 5 mins from here and not sure I'd come back with my girl and her fams.
So much potential, but staff need to back one another up.
I have pics if management requires them. It was quiet in the dining area. It was late afternoon and our waitress really...
