I recently had the (smaller) masala steak gatsby with the works.
Firstly, It was so so good that we ordered it two weekends in a row.
Secondly, even though it was the smaller one, the portion is huge. It was at least 40cm long but packed with ingredients. The first time we had it, my wife and I had to finish it over three meals altogether. The second time, we managed it over two meals. However, note that we were stuffed and fully satisfied fullness wise.
Taste-wise, this has been the tastiest gatsby I have ever eaten, even better than the Cosy Corner ones in Cape Town or the ones from Akhalwayas or Akhalzone is Joburg. This gatsby comes with masala chips, strips of steak, garlic polony, russian sausage, lettuce and mayo, amongst other things.
To this end, what gets me is how when you take a big bite with a little bit of everything, you get the classic masala taste throughout but also the individual tastes of the different ingredients also coming through. That is, it doesn't have that mono masala gatsby taste that stays with every bite until its finished (like elsewhere). You get the masala taste up front and then the taste of each different ingredient comes through tastily. The steak is really tasty and the pop of the mayo lettuce is inspired when you get a bite of it. The russian and polony also tastes so good and the food is just so fresh. I can't express how tasty the food is.
I think you get very good value for money with the gatsby, as well as great taste and freshness (which is amazing for fried foods...lol). I highly recommend this place, in particular the masala gatsby with the works. It will be the best you would have eaten.
On a side note, they also sell a number of very very fresh cakes and pastries. I love the long donut and the horse shoe pastry with fresh cream. However, only buy these if you have more than two people also eating the gatsby, otherwise you will not even be able to eat them because you would be so full after the gatsby.
I can't wait to try some of their...

After all the social media buzz, I decided to give Industry Bakery in Sunninghill a try. We ordered the mini Gatsby, priced at R225, supposedly enough to feed two to three adults.
Visually, the Gatsby looked promising. However, the reality didn’t match the hype. The filling was overwhelmingly chips, with barely any steak — and what little meat there was, lacked both flavor and the signature masala punch. It felt more like a glorified chip roll drowned in mayonnaise than the bold, spicy Cape Town-style Gatsby they advertise.
Despite the menu promising chips, cheese, lettuce, red onion, a “special sauce,” and a protein of your choice — we chose masala steak — our sub lacked the cheese entirely. I raised this with our waiter, who informed the owner. Unfortunately, the owner was not only dismissive but also borderline rude.
When I pointed out the missing cheese, I was told it’s sprinkled above the chips — yet upon inspection, there was clearly none. I also questioned the portion size of the steak, and he insisted it includes 300g, which I highly doubt based on what was served.
No apology. No resolution. No effort to even acknowledge the problem. Just blank stares and defensiveness.
Overall, the experience left a bad taste — not just from the food, but from the poor service and attitude.
For the price and the hype, this was a major letdown. Safe to say, I won’t...
Read moreMy husband and I ordered take aways from this establishment a few minutes ago. The food was exceedingly delicious and tasty (as per my husband’s expectations- he is a regular). We were served by Monica who was sweet and delivered exceptional service (even though I had to return due to the my russian not having been included in our order). Unfortunately, there was an incident that I witnessed, which involved two African brothers. I heard and saw everything that transpired so I attest that they were wrong. Not short thereafter though, one of the family members of the establishment relayed to two individuals about what had transpired earlier. During his explanation, he uttered the N word! Now first of all, that is the equivalent of a white person or any other race for that matter, uttering the K word! Upon hearing that, I called my husband closer to bear witness to my confrontation of the person who wasn’t black uttering the N word. I was immediatelly put off as we live in the 21st century; post-Apartheid South Africa! In my opinion, one of a different descent should not be uttering those gaam words, even if they were said by someone else! It didn’t sit well with me at all and regardless of his lame apology (due to my husband’s presence) it didn’t seem...
