Señor Onion Mexican Cafe — Restaurant in Somerset West

Specifically visited for the first time after reading about good vegan options.

This is a lovely little deli tucked away in a courtyard in Somerset west town. Whilst we didn’t dine in, the courtyard is lovely with trees and flowers and it would be very nice to sit outside.

We had the vegan burritos - with beans and vegan cheese. We had a take away and ate at home. The burrito was so tasty and fresh!! The avocado, jalapeños and salsa comes separate from the burrito which is nice because by the time you’re home, the burrito is still warm and not soggy.

We were both really impressed by the taste and texture of the tortillas - which are homemade. Never had a tortilla so good!! It really makes the burrito exceptional. Also tasted a sample of the hot sauce which was very flavoursome and authentically spiced.

The lady serving was also a delight and really helpful with all the vegan options available to us.

We will be coming again! Thank you to the whole team for providing plant based eaters of South Africa with top class options. It’s nice not to have to drive all the way to Cape Town...

It’s not every day that Indians admit they might not be as spicy-tolerant as they claim! Well, let me be the first to share my delightful experience…

We walked in with confidence, thinking, “We’re the real deal when it comes to spice—how could we not handle it?” But oh boy, did I learn a fun lesson!

If you’re reading this, heed my warning: the jalapeños are SPICY! Get ready for the heat, because they’re everywhere!

But let me tell you, it was absolutely DELICIOUS! From the starters of crispy fried jalapeños and cheesy balls with jalapeños to the mouthwatering beef tacos and chicken and beef quesadillas, every bite is an adventure! Just be ready for some happy sweating! 😅

Tip: Grab jugs of water in advance—it makes the spicy journey so much more...

I've been to Señor Onion a few times, and generally, l enjoyed the food. The service was fine, but l never saw the same waitstaff twice. The last time, l decided to order delivery. The ordering process went smoothly; I ordered chicken fajitas. When my order was delivered, it turned out to be the wrong order; l received a burrito. I don't have anything against burritos, but when l feel like a burrito, l don't order fajitas and hope the restaurant messes up the order. When l immediately informed the restaurant, the reaction was: 'okay, next time better'. No apology, no effort to replace the wrong order with the right one. Terrible service!
