Mesh Coffee — Restaurant in Seoul

“It’s just coffee after all”

Established by industry veterans Kim Hyeon-seob (김현섭) and Kim gi-hoon (김기훈) Mesh, after Fritz and Coffee Libre is one of the most influential speciality cafe brands in Seoul. Pictured here is the ground floor lab and standing bar (only three seats!) where it all started in 2015. Combined with the arrival of Blue Bottle in 2019 (the first in South Korea) the two cafes have gradually turned the eastern suburb of Seongsu-dong into one of the hottest cafe areas in the city.

Part of what makes Mesh so unique is the proximity of the cafe to their roasting lab next-door. In fact all that divides the two spaces is a single floor-to-ceiling glass wall; head roaster Hyeon-seob regularly serves coffee in between coffee roasts, sharing knowledge with regulars, coffee bean customers and chatting with first-time visitors to the area.

Known by locals simply as “Mesh” the brand and it’s directors, the “Artistic Duo” of Hyeon-seob and Gi-hoon, have become synonymous with speciality coffee in the city. Their understanding of coffee in general, from the culture driving it, from green bean and roasting to their global network is difficult to find elsewhere in Korea. Having established the cafe brand the team now devote more time in educating future generations with regular publications, media interviews and overseeing National Barista Competitions. Had a chance to visit Seoul for two separate 10 hour layovers in early August. Tried a variety of coffee shops and roasteries and was really looking forward to Mesh. However, I greeted the service person and right when I was about to order, he turned around and started doing somethiing else leaving me waiting for several minutes until he was finished. Also, their cafe latte was nothing special, about the same as starbucks in America. I would recommend Fritz Coffee for a truely special coffee...

Mesh coffee is a roastery cafe so they are not fancy or have many seats.(there is only on standing bar inside and few seats outside)

Their signature menu is a ‘Coffee Shake’, which is a iced Cafe Latte with some sweet added.
