Walking along C/ Pintor Lorenzo Casanova in Alicante on our way to a restaurant some friends had recommended, we were passing The Velvet Fork and felt we just had to cross the road for a closer look. You can see straight into the brilliantly designed and beautifully lit interior - it stands out so much we thought we should look at the menu. The very smartly uniformed waiting staff were happy for us to do so. We explained we had a reservation elsewhere but were so impressed with the menu we assured them we'd pay a visit before we left Alicante. I was particularly drawn to the Foie Gras Ice Cream in the hot starter section. The restaurant opens at 6pm and on our last night we made sure we kept our promise. Wow! i don't think I've ever used the word 'Faultless' in a restaurant review before, but this is the best word to describe The Velvet Fork. Others would include, delicious, fantastic flavour, perfectly cooked - basically any superlative that can be applied to fine dining. I shied away from the foie gras ice cream as a starter and went for grilled prawns, while my wife opted for smoked duck breast slices with marinated pineapple. Both were generous in size and superb in flavour. We couldn't decide between them which we liked best so shared both dishes. Val had gone for the fillet steak while I chose sea bass as my main. Again, both were perfectly executed and completely delicious. Val decided she had to try a dessert and chose the baked cheesecake with berries. I had the inspired thought that the foie gras ice cream might work just as well as a dessert. I was right. It's nothing short of brilliant - and we agreed the cheesecake was the best we'd ever had. I'm sure this sounds a very OTT review. We treated ourselves to some of the most expensive dishes on the menu, so the per-person spend could easily be substantially less and I can't imagine the quality would be any less. All I'll say is: If you like inspired dishes faultlessly cooked, go to The Velvet Fork, enjoy outstanding food and service in a subtly mellow atmosphere and judge for yourself if I am right. The other restaurant was very good too, but The Velvet Fork was our...
Read moreWe ate in the restaurant last night, and were extremely disappointed. My husband had the lamb, I had the Turbot (€38), both were so dry, it was close to inedible. I ate mine as I was so hungry and had been waiting all day, my husband, who is an absolute meat lover, left half of his lamb behind, which he would never do! We've been to Alicante several times before and have been meaning to get the restaurant several times before. We only live in Barcelona, very short trip for us. My husband did not want to bring it up, in house, but he brought it up with the front of house gentleman. His remark, oh your English, so you must know meat!! In a very cutting tone. We are not, how presumptuous, and really, should it matter what country we are from?? We know good food, and this was not it!! We've lived all over the world, so yes, we 💯 know our food!! Outside of that, the music was so loud that it was nearly impossible to have a conversation without shouting!! There was a flashing light beside our table which was extremely bright, and very off putting. Only plus side, was the lovely staff!! It was overall, very disappointing and we would not recommend...
Read moreThere are few occasions when I am left so thoroughly disappointed by an establishment, and unfortunately, this was one of them. The burger I ordered was a complete letdown — not only was it sloppily assembled, but the meat was overwhelmingly salted, creating a jarring and unappetizing flavor. For a price of 19 euros, I expected far better.
While the drinks were undoubtedly enjoyable, it’s difficult to overlook the flaws in the food, as a restaurant’s core offering should always be its cuisine. The meatballs, in particular, were a glaring misstep. They lacked flavor, were poorly seasoned, and had a texture that was more rubbery than tender. They didn’t feel fresh or thoughtfully prepared, which was surprising given the attention to detail I would expect from a place at this price point.
It’s unfortunate, because while the ambiance and service were decent, the quality of the food ultimately overshadowed any positives.
I cannot recommend this restaurant based on the...
