As someone visiting Spain โ and Barcelona โ for the very first time, I had no idea my entire view on seafood was about to change.
Iโve never enjoyed seafood in Texas, where Iโm from. I always found it too fishy, too chewy, or just not fresh enough. So when I sat down at OโPeregrino, a cozy Galician restaurant tucked away in Barcelona, I honestly didnโt expect much. I ordered the Langostinos Frescos more out of curiosity than excitement.
And wow โ it completely blew me away.
These fresh prawns were grilled simply with olive oil and sea salt, and they were absolutely perfect. Tender, sweet, and full of flavor, they didnโt have that overwhelming fishy taste I was used to back home. It was the first time I understood why people love seafood.
I also tried the pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus) โ another surprise favorite โ and the empanadas, which were flaky and delicious. The staff was incredibly warm and made the whole experience feel like a family dinner. I paired my meal with a glass of crisp Albariรฑo, which balanced the seafood beautifully.

Overall, the taste of the food was close to perfection. The appetizer of fried anchovies (Boquerones) was incredibly fresh and delicious. The most memorable dish, the Bluefin Tuna Carpaccio, was exceedingly fresh, with a rich flavor, and the sauce mixed with it enhanced the taste of the tuna with a remarkable umami. The bread served alongside was also perfectly warm and well-toasted. Additionally, we ordered a clam dish that incomparably surpassed the taste and freshness of clam dishes at tapas restaurants frequently visited by tourists. Among the clams, the โtamburinyaโ clam, paired with pickled vegetables, offered an excellent texture and flavor. The main dish, paella, was served with fresh mussels, shrimp, and langoustine. Naturally, the taste was exceptional, given the presence of langoustine. The temperature and texture of the paella were also very pleasing. Furthermore, the very kind staff member, Miguel, meticulously prepared the shrimp and mussels for us. The second main dish, a meat dish, featured the lean and flavorful meat typical of Spain, not the fatty beef common in Korea. It was delicious, with a great chewy texture and a generous portion.
Desserts are crucial for many. The dessert was truly excellent. The warm compote made with fresh strawberries and generously topped with Madagascar vanilla ice cream was genuinely delicious. For the drink, we followed the staffโs recommendation and enjoyed a Catalan Cava from the Penedรจs region in Catalonia, which was very clean and complemented the restaurantโs dishes well.
Service
Our service was provided by Miguel. He was incredibly kind, and his pride in the food, along with his detailed explanations, was truly admirable. He also closely monitored our eating pace and the timing for changing plates, always maintaining a smile. Although Miguel does not speak English, communication was not an issue thanks to voice translation on Google Translate, which he actively used. So, do not worry if you donโt speak the language; Miguel will do his best to assist you. He was very enthusiastic about recommending dishes.
