Somnia — Restaurant in Barcelona

It was nighttime, wintertime, and we were exploring the rather quaint alleys just off Barcelona’s famed Las Ramblas. There before us, tucked away on a corner was a vibrant, warm bar - with a popcorn maker in the window! “FX Cocktails and Magic” it proclaimed, with a lovely multi-lingual, not-in-the-least pushy host on the door.

I took a photo and we strolled on. An hour later we strolled back and walked in. Immediately a fresh tub of perfectly salted hot popcorn and two chupitos, compliments of the house, arrived at our table.

The ambience was wonderful - a stunning bar, beautifully attired and supremely skilled mixologists kept us thoroughly entertained, after we had perused their just as eclectic cocktail menu.

My partner ordered a Manhattan - the first of two, and each made to perfection - and I ordered a Cold ‘Hot Toddie’

A handsome multi-lingual Magician arrived at our table and kept us entertained with some truly fabulous sleight-of-hand card tricks.

Next up I ordered an Old Fashioned - perfect!

Our own orders where distinctly vanilla compared to what we were watching being made at the bar - some extraordinary creations were being served, and should I ever want to impress anyone in future, I’ll be whisking them straight to Somnia in a heartbeat.

Hands down one of the best and most innovative bars we’ve ever visited. SOMNIA isn’t your typical cocktail bar — the drinks made by the talented mixologists here are simply a work of art.

We walked in on a Thursday night and were able to snatch a table, but they also offer reservations (recommended on weekends). As soon as we walked inside, we felt transported to a new dimension. The bar theme is “circus,” and they take it quite seriously. When I say circus, I don’t mean your cliché circus, but a mystical one filled with odes to pop culture, the most eye-catching decor, and a vibe like no other. For example, the menu comes in a literal magician’s hat, and you get popcorn as you wait for your work of art — I mean, drink! — to be concocted.

Their signature cocktails, ranging from €10-15, were made of the most exotic ingredients. We had four cocktails unlike anything we had ever tasted. The cocktails truly awaken all of your senses, especially since they put a lot of emphasis on the presentation. The drinks are worth every penny.

Service was also top-notch. The staff checked on us throughout the night to ensure we had everything needed.
