A few days ago I went to Carvón restaurant, a little gem hidden in Moraira, a small village in the coast of Alicante. It's a small restaurant but very charming, just like their staff. I like cozy restaurants, the ones you know you're going to have an attentive service, and it was just like that. I felt like at home, not only because of their friendly service but because of their homemade food, made with love and passion (you could tell because everything was absolutely delicious!). All food was fresh and from the area, which makes it even better. There were quite a few choices and all of them sounded great, so Sandra (the lady who runs the restaurant) made a few recommendations. I had a few tapas: mullet roe with almonds, paired with a glass of Albariño wine, it was really nice. Cod fritter with pine nuts and mayo, paired with Verdejo wine. It was delicious and it melted in my mouth. I had "mosquitos de mar" which were like very little crabs deep fried with romescu sauce. They were incredible and addictive. I found this tapa very original as I had never tried something like that before! To finish my starters, I had cuttlefish and potato salad, paired with Chardonnay. This salad was simply spectacular. It came with crunchy wasabi (but it wasn't spicy), edamame and seaweed. Each bite was a explosion of flavours. Really really good. For my main, a chargrilled entrecot of veal, paired with Ribera del Duero. It was cooked rare and the meat was very tasty, tender and I really enjoyed it. Top main! Although I was quite full, I still had room for dessert and I decided to go for their famous Stilton cheesecake, paired with a sweet wine from France. It was the cherry on the cake to finish what it was a perfect meal. Carvón is a great restaurant that I highly recommend because of their service, quality and exquisite dishes. Thank you Germán, Sandra and Juanjo. I will...
Read morePrior research led to high expectations of Carvon but unfortunately I was severely disappointed. As a food writer, I eat out a lot, and will pretty much pay anything for a meal of quality but in my opinion the food here is massively overpriced. In theory, this should have been the best meal of my holiday; high quality meat and fresh turbot cooked over fire with nothing to distract from the natural flavours. And while to some extent this was evident, the meat, in particular, despite having Its Galician Blonde credentials, was lacking in anything that made it worthy of the price tag; perhaps a better crust would have added depth of flavour. Additionally, while I understand wanting to promote house specialities, the over-sell of additional starters felt disingenuous. I admire the concept but unfortunately I would...
