Restaurant Braseria "El Caliu" — Restaurant in Vic

Authentic Catalan food. My wife and I went there because I wanted to try “pata de polp” (octopus tentacle). I ordered a glass of wine and the entree “pata de polp”. My wife was not feeling well, so she ordered a glass of wine and a small plate of parmesan.

Then, the manager approaches and says that that place is not a bar, it is a restaurant, and that if we want to eat there, my wife also has to order an entree. To add insult to injury, the waitress then adds that if my wife is sitting without eating an entree, then she’s taking the place of someone else who wants to eat an entree… Tell me about feeling unwelcome.

I felt that the manager showed really poor empathy and that their behavior was unwarranted. I understand that cultural differences exist, but this cannot be justified by cultural differences. That was just rude.

We ended up ordering another “pata de polp” to comply with his request... but the bitter taste left by the manager prevented me from enjoying the meal. We ate without smiling or appreciating the meal. In hindsight, we should have...

Entramos en el primer turno 13:00 h, comprueban que estés en la lista de reservas y te asignan una mesa. A partir de ahí hubo un poco de descontrol, que acabaron solucionando. Pedimos los aperitivos de la casa Patatas chips, virutas de parmesano y rodajas de llonganissa (muy buena por cierto) y los sirvieron a una mesa que entró después que nosotros y no los había pedido. Una vez se dieron cuenta los clientes de la otra mesa, renunciaron a ellos al ver que tenían coste; pero ya los habían tocado. Nos sirvieron otros aperitivos, sin reconocer el error, y tuvimos que reclamar unas croquetas de bacalao que seguramente también fueran a otra mesa; ya que aquí si nos comentó la jefa de sala, que de cocina habían salido.

El aperitivo correcto destacando la llonganissa y las croquetas de bacalao (sugerencia del día) muy gustosa y cremosa.

Como plato principal pedimos tres de cordero a la brasa y un entrecot de 250 / 300 gr.

La calidad de la carne buena y el punto correctísimo. Como dato curioso comentar que la guarnición va aparte y puedes elegir entre patatas fritas, berenjena rebozada, pimientos del piquillo y judías del ganxet salteadas. El coste es mínimo, pero sorprende que te cobren por la guarnición. Si no la pides la carne viene sola.

Tienen tres tipos de pan: a la piedra, de Pagés y de Coca Nosotros pedimos el pan a la piedra, miga generosa pero con mucho aire dentro, lo cual lo hace muy ligero y sabroso.

Dos copas de vino de la casa, tres aguas y una gaseosa.

Los postres caseros, probamos el tiramisú y la panacota con frutos rojos. Ambos correctos.

Dos cafés con hielo.

El ambiente lo puntuo bajo ya que, para mí gusto, el local es un poco oscuro.

Además tuvimos la "suerte" de tener en la mesa contigua un grupo muy ruidoso, que además de hablar a gritos y dado que el local estaba lleno no había posibilidad de cambiar de mesa.

The must do thing on a Saturday morning in Vic is to visit their flea market at the major square. The next thing you shall do is to walk around the medieval city center. Third one is to eat something at the many restaurants in this small city. Pretty good option if you are looking for salad and grill is El Caliu. There are a few selection of tapas, a bunch of interesting salads and grilled meats. Everything is excellent, including the service, the cosi decoration and the price!
