Updated review: Previous visit (2021): Interesting cuisine. Most recent visit (2023): a very disappointing revisit to Chola. We were all very underwhelmed with the food. For the price that you are paying we expected more. Tacos, fine. Dumpings, fine. Ceviche, fine. Nothing really stood out as good. The service was also not great. The sweet wines, the staff had no idea about. Perhaps they'd run out? But they were bringing bottle out and asking us to check when it was listed in the menu. We were forced to sit inside, as we had a child with us, and one of the main reasons we visited was to sit in the pretty garden out back. So that was a shame. Lastly, and a bit cheeky, we were a group of three, and they said they would accommodate for the portions that were for two, but didn't mention the extra cost. It would have been fine, but let us know upfront, rather than seeing a bit of a surprise on the bill at the end of the meal. And given it was quite dear for each dish, it made the final bill very high. Probably the most expensive meal we've had in Javea this year, and it wouldn't make the top 10. We won't be going back, which is a shame as the story, the owners and team seem to have the right attitude, just very unimpressed by the meal. :(

The place that offered us one of the best meal during our latest visit to Spain. Traditional design location, is suited for both small and large groups, the food it’s just amazing, you will be surprised by the amazing flavours dish after dish. We didn’t even checked the menu, but asked for recommendations and we were not disappointed at all. The Cocktails were delicious as well, and the wine collection offered many choices

A Roller coaster of Flavors and Drama! The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the cobbled streets of the old town Jávea. Our group of four had been eagerly anticipating our dinner at Chola Gastro. The buzz around this place was palpable, like the prelude to a grand performance. Chola Gastro, offers a delightful fusion of Peruvian & Latin cuisine with a Mediterranean twist…. The restaurant’s facade beckoned us with rustic charm. Strings of fairy lights crisscrossed above the entrance, promising an enchanting evening. As we stepped inside, the air hummed with laughter and clinking glasses. The decor was a delightful mishmash of vintage posters, masks on the wall and various potted plants. We settled into our table, scanned the QR code for the menu, ready for the gastronomic adventure.

The Arrogant Waitress Enter the waitress (one of the owners) glided toward us, her apron cinched tightly, eyes assessing our table. Her name tag read “Lola,” but we’d soon learn that it should’ve said “Drama Queen.” She had the air of someone who’d invented the art of eye-rolling. As she recited the specials, her disdain for my Spanglish banter was thinly veiled. But I shrugged it off; after all, the food was the star here.

The Starters Imagine delicate slices of fresh tuna, kissed by citrus and adorned with microgreens. The flavours pirouette on your tongue, a dance of ocean and zest. We closed our eyes, savouring each bite, and wondered if the sea itself had joined the feast. Peruvian Causa: A vibrant mosaic of mashed yellow potatoes, layered with creamy avocado, zesty lime, and a hint of ají Amarillo. It’s like Picasso met a Peruvian grandmother in the kitchen. The colours pop, and the taste? Explosions of joy. The starters set the stage for an unforgettable performance.

The Mains The curtain rose on our main courses. Lola, with a flourish, presented two dishes, a rib of beef and a plate of croquettes which looked, cooked and tasted like perfection on a plate. Several minutes later, the chicken dishes arrived. The aroma’s promised perfection. But alas! The chicken was rawer than a rookie stand-up comedian. Our forks hovered, suspended in disbelief. Us English speakers exchanged wide-eyed glances, while the Spanish speaking duo exchanged rapid-fire whispers. We had a decision to make: eat the chicken and risk salmonella or take a stand.

The Showdown For some strange reason I was elected to raise the alarm! “Excuse me,” I said, my Spanglish bravado intact. “This chicken is practically clucking. We can’t eat this, and to be honest, we don’t have time to wait for 2 other dishes to be prepared as we had to dash out in time for the San Juan Fiesta”. At this point, things felt rather awkward, probably as my dodgy Spanglish accent hadn’t cut the mustard. We collectively agreed (between our party) and offered to pay for our bill (less the 2 clucking chickens) along with a €25 tip, which in the grand scheme of things felt about right!! Or NOT so we discovered! Lola’s nostrils flared; she summoned the chef. And then it happened! The kitchen doors swung open, out stormed the chef (turned out to be Lola’s sister & business partner). Twas Lola’s sister alright, but with extra spice! Her eyes blazed, her words scorched the air. In rapid-fire Spanish shouted a few words (which I never understood), then to ensure “we got the message” told us in perfect English to “fuck off” not once, not twice, but thrice. The diners nearby gaped, forks suspended mid-bite.

We were now officially barred from Chola Gastro!.

The Finale: Festival Escape Well at this point, our dignity was left hanging but still intact (Just). As we stepped into the night, we realised that Chola Gastro wasn’t just a restaurant, it was a theatre of flavours and feuds. Our next stop? The San Juan festival, where we’d leap through fire, leaving behind the taste of under cooked chicken and the echoes of profanity. Verdict: 🌟🌟 🌟 (for drama), 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (for fire) Chola Gastro, you’ve left an indelible mark on our taste buds and our...
