This Balaji Dosai outlet is a popular and very highly rated eatery in the Kandy city. It offers fully vegetarian food, so it is a popular place among Hindus and other vegetarians alike. It is also visited by Buddhists who flock to Kandy on Poya days to pay homage to the Triple Gem, because most Buddhists observe a vegetarian diet on Poya days.
Went there for dinner. Went through the menu and my family members opted for Dosa. They ordered a Kara Dosa, Onion Dosa and a Paper Dosa. As a ritual, I ordered a fried rice. Since they do not offer meat or eggs, I had to settle for a dish of Vegetable Fried Rice. We also ordered Masala Chai.
All dosas tasted ok. The onion dosa had just raw onion pieces inside.
Now, let's review the Vegetable Fried Rice dish. To begin with, is was not a fried rice at all. It was a mixed rice; pieces of vegetables mixed with rice. It was not tasty at all, and the portion was less than half of what other places would serve.
A small chickpeas dish and a mushroom dish were supplied with the rice.
Rice was served in an oval shaped metal dish placed on a metal tray. When I tried to use the spoon, the plate kept rotating, making it impossible to eat.
Then the Masala Chai. It was just a milk tea with some spicy taste. Not at all the original chai taste. And my wife didn't even drink it because she felt it had a foul smell.
The place was not clean as it used to be.
The rice plate was priced at Rs 400/=. I am sure it costs less than Rs.100 to prepare.
And I am sure this sort of a chai can be offered for just Rs.150.
Dosa is one of cheapest food to make. Those who have made Dosa at home would know that. Paying Rs.400 plus for dosa is absurd in my point of view.
When we were doing A/Ls, we used to go to places where they served dosas. We pay only for the dosas and the waiters would bring sambals and sambaru in large buckets and pour over the dosas. They would pour them even when we beg to stop. I am pretty amazed to hear that Balaji charges for those fist sized plates of sambal, sambaru, curries, etc. Also, the white sambal we used to enjoy with dosa is not served at Balaji.
My conclusion: This Balaji Dosai outlet is a very highly overrated eatery that serve overpriced food.
Over Hyped, Super Expensive and the worst service you will see in entire Srilanka, Trust me Srilanka is a such a beautiful place with very kind people, But this is the worst you can experience, Dont go by the reviews,
We ordered a lot (Bill attached for reference)
Food - Very Bland and tasteless, Never ever order their Lassi, its super watery with loads of sugar and gives you an everlasting bad taste. The food was served in extremely unhygienic plates and cups. The quantity of chutney and sambhar provided is not enough for even 1/4th of the dosa.
Service - Pathetic, They make you to wait forever, The number of people who serve are very less adding to further delay. Nobody cares to even serve you water. When asked for additional Chutney, he clearly refused saying it will take 20 mins to get it as he is busy serving. All the restaurants in Srilanka keep the chutney and Sambhar bowl in each table which this restaurant clearly doesnt want to do.
Billing - This is daytime robbery - as a lot of tourists come from India, multiple boards would be kept mentioning money can be transferred in INR directly via UPI, Now here starts the SCAM, the currency conversion rate is not direct and he charges 10% more. Attaching proofs for your reference. they dont mention this scam and we realized only after we paid as there too much rush near the billing. LKR we billed was 11650 (which converts to 3436rs (1 INR = 3.39LKR) ) But he made us transfer 3884rs (1 INR = 3 LKR).
The fact is , they project this is a convenience for Indian travelers but this is a scam and we would have very well paid with the converted LKR we had with us.
You can even pay the LKR money directly via GPAY UPI, for which the conversion would be 3.29rs
Do not fall for the reviews and Strictly save your time/money/mood by not visiting to this biggest disgrace to Srilankan Tourism.
Of my entire 1 week stay in Srilanka this is the worst restaurant which served worst quality unhygenic food with pathetic attitude of the server and management who also loots your money.
