Hyaku Sushi — Restaurant in Göteborgs Stad

With the new development around Gamlestaden, it slowly becomes kind of a hub for a new restaurant scene. Hyaku is one of them, situated right at Gamlestads torg and offering mainly Sushi, but also some Japanese-inspired stir fry.

The atmosphere of Hyaku is modern and calm. It feels quite nice to enter, though the place is pretty small and some seats are outside the restaurant in the hallway next to the gym entrance. It’s a bit awkward, but they make the best of it. The menu is nicely designed with many good pictures, so you can get an idea straight away. They try to give an exclusive vibe, but the prices are pretty low. Edamame at 55 SEK, wakame at 35 SEK or a main dish around 139 SEK. Very okay on that front.

They offer some vegan sushi rolls, even crispy one that is deep fried in a tempura batter. Not a regular sight! Other than that, there are some stir fry options with tofu.

We went for both crispy vegan and the spicy wok with tofu. Both dishes arrived shortly thereafter and are served on nice plates with a side salad. The side salad has some interesting cucumber cutting techniques as you can see on the picture, but that’s alright.

Taste-wise it’s pretty decent. The sushi is well composed and gives a very comforting vibe all together. High quality ingredients are clearly used here. The stir fry is well done as well. The tofu is deep fried and nicely puffed up and crispy and works well with the vegetables in the sauce. The sauce itself is not the greatest one and a bit too strong, or rather too much of it is used, but all in all it’s a very decent execution and dish.

At another time I also tried the black pepper wok, but that sauce is a bit too strong on the pepper in my opinion. Still, decent and a nice change.

Hyaku also offers lunch deals to a fair price and overall it’s a little bit of a hidden gem. It can get packed however, especially during lunch as options are limited around the area.

Hyaku is a great place for some vegan sushi or stir-fry if you are craving it. One of the better places around Gothenburg, and especially Gamlestaden, and the kitchen definitely desires a high quality of their ingredients....

Update: After my original review the owner invited me for a talk. I promised to update this review when I saw a change.

They now clearly offer something veg on lunch and the staff knows how to handle special dietary requests better. Super.

Original review: Don’t go here If you expect service. They can not handle allergies or alternatives for vegetarians during lunch. I earlier went here regularly as I work close by and it’s always a problem, and show no willingness to help. They expect vegetarians and vegans to order from the regular menu during lunch and not have lunch deals. They never have vegetarian or vegan lunch...

Har hört gott om Hyaku Sushi vid Gamlestaden i Göteborg. Dock är upplevelsen något helt annat.

Jag vet inte vart jag ska börja nästan då de var flera olika faktorer i sammanhanget som bidrar till en stjärna på denna recensionen.

Vi beställde bokstavligen sushi för ca 1200kr. Bitarna är väldigt små och smaklösa. Vi bad om en lite speciell sushi pga allergier men fick det med det som sällskapet hade allergier mot. Vi ville ha plain sushi utan en massa krångel och extra toppingar. (Vi sa till)

Personalen som jobbade med att tillaga sushin var helt ok trevliga förutom den lite större och mulligare thai killen med hyfsat långt hår. Hans hår var överallt och så även på vår sushi när vi kom hem. Mycket otrevlig och dryg samt nonchalant. När vi ställde frågor så svarade han inte. Inget leende, inget hej eller hejdå och ingen service över huvudtaget! Fipplar med telefonen med handskar på och sen fortsätter han laga mat med exakt samma handskar.

Jag förstår thailändska flytande fastän jag inte är från Thailand och jag kunde bara höra hur den mullige thai kocken pratade dåligt om allt och alla, specifikt mig och mitt sällskap på thailändska.

För övrigt verkade resterande av personalen vara helt borta och flummiga. Den andra sushi kocken står och snackar med en tjej och de kramas och pratar samt att han också har handskar på sig som han sedan också använder för att tillaga sushin.

Serverings personalen som verkar vara de enda som kan prata svenska var även de ute och dagdrömde verkar det som. Inte närvarande alls.

Jag hade lätt kunnat vända i dörren och åka till andra sidan stan för att besöka ett annat sushi ställe men sällskapet jag var med ville vara kvar tyvärr.

Så kort och gott! Besök INTE Hyaku Sushi. Finns mycket bättre alternativ, till bättre priser dessutom. Går aldrig dit igen. Mycket dåligt.
