THE PENNY — Restaurant in Aarau

The main reason for not giving a higher rating is inconsistency. Sometimes there is a nice pub atmosphere, other times less so. Same with the staff - sometimes friendly, sometimes not so much. If you just want to have a couple of pints or watch football, it's not a bad option. The last couple of times I was there, the food was downright bad, so unfortunately I can't really recommend eating there. Also, since the reboot, they have reduced the beer selection - probably for practical reasons if they were not selling, but I do miss a few of the beers they used to have that are harder to find on tap in Switzerland (Tuborg and Tetley's for example). Now they just have more or less the same beers as every Swiss pub, too bad. Still, it is nice to have a pub in Aarau that shows Premier League and it's very convenient for the train station. The potential is however not fully realized...

I may be a bit biased, but I really like this pub. It has, to my knowledge, the widest variety of beers in Aarau, as to be expected. Didn't really try out much of the other beverages, but it should be ok. The food is on the better end of pub food, it's even called something like 'Charlie's Kitchen'. A long time ago, I tried one of the lunch menues during a quiz event, it was alright. The pub has all kinds of customers, army people, old metal heads, business people, couples, soccer fans after a playoff. I'm more on the younger side of the spectrum. When it's getting rowdy, the staff will intervene, so do not hesitate telling them, if you're feeling uncomfortable. There is usually ample seating outside, though the inside can get pretty packed on the weekends. From time to time, there are events and live music. These are cool, look...

This place can be atmospheric, has a great beer selection, the staff is amazing. However, it's loud, rowdy, and at times very unpleasant.

Stay away whenever any fotball event is going on, whether it's local, national or international. Everything is shown on their screens. Witnessed violence more than once.

Prices are higher than many Zurich pubs I know.

Music is played from a digital jukebox, controlled by teens, at way too high volumes. Not fitting a pub.
