As I expected: after reading their response offering that I should contact them should I have any further need and noting that they DID NOT include a contact email address, I followed up on their general email address and got NO RESPONSE. More lies and empty words from this establishment who write “contact us” but leave no contact details or respond at their general address? This establishment with poor worker training, incompetent customer response and most of all LACK OF INTEGRITY and DISHONESTY doesn’t deserve your business. They rest lazily on the view and location they are lucky to have.

I do not believe you included any way for me to get in touch with you in your reply. What I would like, which I asked from the start, was a waiver of the one night’s stay, for the horrible impact your employee’s negligence put on the 5 remaining days of our trip. Disputing with our credit card company and being relayed the ridiculous things your hotel responded to them, that you were not responsible for things left behind by guests (as if we had left a sweatshirt behind in our room and not that your hotel employee hadn’t returned the passport which they required as part of check in process) and then lies that you had contacted us first when your hotel in fact did not even REALIZE you had the passport until we called two days later. If you had indeed contacted us right away, we could have returned to the hotel and retrieved the passport as we were in the area until 8pm that day of checkout. Instead, we were in a totally different part of the country when we realized and called you.

Please stand behind your words and send an address so that my one night’s stay at minimum can be reimbursed.

Incompetent hotel worker ruined last 5 days of our vacation

We decided to stay to enjoy the mountain after the day visitors left. In that regard it was a success. However upon check out, hotel employee failed to return my husband’s passport which they took as part of their check in protocol.

We realized this only 2 days later when we were controlled on a train. We called hotel right away who said they would mail the next day Wednesday and we would receive on Thursday. They said regular mail would be fine. Well, we didn’t receive passport until Saturday THE DAY BEFORE we were leaving the country. From Tuesday to Saturday we were contacting the embassy, the consulate, trying to figure out courier services, trying to find a neighbor to accept delivery as our friends had had their mail stopped while away, etc and generally stressed about my husband not being able to leave the country.

When we ask them to waive our one night stay to make up for the damage to our trip, they refused. When we disputed through our credit card company, they actually lied and said it was not their responsibility if a guest leaves something behind. WHAT? We didn’t leave anything behind, they neglected to return what they asked as part of their check in process! They also lied and said they contacted us first!

Appalled by their lack of accountability and lies.

The mountain was beautiful (though dirty around mountain house bc trash not picked up) but the staff was overwhelmed, incompetent and then worst of...

This is a really unique place to stay. The attraction of staying here isn’t the room or the facilities (although they are very clean and more than adequate). The reason you stay here is so that you can have Grindelwald First essentially ALL TO YOURSELF. First is one of the most popular attractions in the Jungfrau region and during the day it packs with tourists going on all the rides and stuffing the Skywalk with long lines. Well, the last gondola down the mountain stops running roughly some time between 5 and 6 pm, and doesn’t start running again until 8 am. So in between that time there’s only the hotel/restaurant staff and a handful of guest parties. I cannot even adequately describe with words how enjoyable and peaceful it is to stand out there on the Skywalk all by myself just soaking in the majesty of the views without being rushed. Another huge bonus—the weather in the Jungfrau region during summertime is often rainy and cloudy. You might get lucky with a perfectly clear and sunny day, but you might also get an entire week of rain and clouds which basically wipe out views. But even in an unlucky week of rain when we visited, the EARLY mornings on the mountains are oftentimes relatively clear—and that is the best time you get on the mountain if you stay here! I was up early just after dawn and it was clear enough to see the mountain peaks. It was spectacular. I had the entire place literally all to myself for 90 minutes before another family came out on the Skywalk briefly.||Another huge advantage if you want to do all the fun stuff on First is that you can easily be the first people in line to do the First Flyer, Glider, Trottibikes, or Mountain Carts! Why stand in line for hours when the crowds get there? You can either do the rides right before closing when most people have gone down the mountain or even better be literally the first person in line for the rides before anyone can even get there! The First Flyer station is a short walk down a hill right outside the hotel. Once you go down the flyer you just hop onto the glider or trottibikes at Schreckfeld! Do you want to hike to Bachalpsee Lake? Do it before (or after) anyone else can and have the entire place to yourself! ||So as far as the accommodations go, it’s kind of a no frills hostel. The beds and comforters were comfortable enough. There are shared bathrooms/showers. The food is…not great. We had dinner and then breakfast the next morning there as it’s really the only option. They do have good beer and the service was friendly. If you have dietary pickiness, consider bringing some of your own food! ||Overall the experience of basically having Grindelwald First to yourself makes this place worth 5 stars. In a world where travel usually involves dealing with massive crowds, it’s a...

Must update my review. This hotel took my husband’s passport as part of their check in protocol and then forgot to return it at check out. We only realized two days later when we were in an entirely different part of Switzerland when we got controlled for a train pass. It is telling that the hotel themselves never called us letting us know they still had our passport. Next four days of our vacation were marred by worry about getting our passport returned in time for our flight back to the US. We only received it the DAY BEFORE our departure which contributed lots of anxiety and stress to our trip. When we asked the hotel to waive our one night stay to make up for their mistake which caused so much stress, they REFUSED. We disputed with our credit card and then the hotel LIED and said it was not their responsibility if a guest leaves something behind and that THEY had contacted US. We did not leave something behind in our room. They did not return something which they took as part of their check in protocol. They never called us. Never would have thought we’d have this kind of experience in Switzerland. Would not recommend as the hotel is dishonest and cannot offer a token for their awful vacation ruining mistake. I tried to give benefit of doubt in my earlier review but given how this has played out, I would give them negative stars if I could. Horrible, incompetent, dishonest hotel.

Lots of recent bad reviews. I think they are overwhelmed by the amount of tourists.

Overall, confused service. Had to wait to check in, little information given about the amenities or the half-board, but the staff tried their best to have a nice attitude. I think they did well, given how busy they looked.

Location can not be beat. To have the mountain to ourselves between 6pm and 8:30am was amazing.

Dinged a star because the premises were not cleaned well. There was trash outside our window which was supposed to provide a beautiful view to the mountains. Trash was spewn all over the floor of the terrasse restaurant. That is the fault of the tourist horde who do not clean up after themselves. But the hotel should hire either more staff or staff to do this particular job to clean the grounds.

Overall, we were happy to...

It has taken me quite a bit of time to finally get to this, but am happy to finally be able to write this review! Arjan, Tom, and the team and Berggasthaus First were an absolute delight to work with, in planning and hosting our July 2024 wedding. They were very communicative throughout the entire process, helping us to plan a menu with very complicated dietary restrictions; organise the ceremony, apero, and lunch logistics; and setting up everything for us prior to the day. They were very accommodating with our request of an outdoor ceremony, which they were able to make happen on the field just below the terrace. And of course, the incredible surroundings of the area provided the most dramatic backdrop for this ceremony. Given that we were not unable to set up anything before the day of the wedding (as the restaurant is in constant use during the week), Arjan and the team were able to take this job completely out of our hands, including receiving the flower delivery themselves and doing the full set up of all the table arrangements, decorations, ceremony, and apero, all on the morning of our wedding. A meeting was held at their restaurant prior to the day, to run through all the details, and to create an example table for them, in order to show how we wanted everything to look when they set it up themselves, and their attention to detail fully exceeded our expectations. On top of the set up, they were very hands on throughout the day, making sure that everything was in order, and that all guests with dietary restrictions/allergies were being served the correct meal. Because of their efforts, we were able to fully enjoy the day, without too much worry about logistics. For that, we have everyone at the Berggasthaus First to thank for making our day truly memorable. We look forward to our next visit to Grindelwald, and this beautiful region, which we are so privileged to say is now forever attached to this wonderful memory of the best day of our lives. Thank you and Merci vielmals!

Berggasthaus First: A Must-Stop Alpine Feast with a View Perched high above Grindelwald, Berggasthaus First is more than just a mountain restaurant—it’s a well-earned reward after a thrilling ski run or a scenic gondola ride. Offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, this spot delivers on both atmosphere and culinary delights, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the First area. The food selection is excellent, catering to all cravings, whether you’re after something hearty or just a quick bite before heading back on the slopes. Their burgers are a standout, served with juicy patties, fresh toppings, and a perfectly toasted bun—exactly what you need to refuel after carving through powder. If you’re looking for something with a bit more warmth and spice, the curry is a fantastic option, rich in flavor and served with fluffy rice. The pasta dishes are equally satisfying, offering a comforting and filling meal that keeps you energized for the rest of the day. Of course, no ski break is complete without the perfect après-ski drink, and Berggasthaus First delivers with an impressive selection of cold beer and champagne. Whether you’re toasting to an unforgettable run or simply soaking in the views, a crisp Swiss beer or a glass of bubbly is the ideal pairing for the moment. The outdoor seating area, when weather permits, is the place to be—nothing beats sipping a drink while gazing out over the stunning alpine landscape. Service is efficient and friendly, keeping up with the steady flow of hungry skiers and hikers. Despite its altitude, Berggasthaus First offers top-quality food and drinks, making it a standout destination for an on-mountain ski break. Whether you’re in the mood for a comforting meal or just a celebratory glass of champagne, this alpine gem delivers an experience that’s as satisfying as the adventure that brought you here.

Had a wonderful stay at Berggasthaus First. We hiked here from Meiringen/Schwarzwadalp which was a beautiful walk. We were only here for one night but thoroughly enjoyed it. As soon as we arrived for check in at 2pm, we were shown to our room (large glassy dormitory) and shown how to get to the facilities (communal showers) by very friendly and charismatic staff. The place was very busy with tourists most of the day until 5pm or so, by which time most visitors had left to get the cable car back to Grindelwald and the place was serene and peaceful with just hotel guests staying. We walked to Lake Baschalpsee in the evening around 4pm and it was very quiet. We enjoyed a 3 course dinner for 25 CHF pp (tasty and good value) at the restaurant, and everything ran very smoothly thanks to Domigo and other staff working there. We were then able to enjoy the sunset from the viewpoint/clifftop which was beautiful, and see a fox who frequents the area! We enjoyed the experience of staying in the large dormitory; everyone was respectful to each other in terms of noise and privacy, and the views from the room were unmatched at any time of day. Would highly recommend people to stay here and hope to come back myself one day!
