Jia Curry Hualien Headquarter — Restaurant in Hualien City

Overall: Overrated food and overpriced drinks. Not a must-go place or somewhere to recommended for special occasions.

The food quality was fine, separately. You can tell that the ingredients were fresh enough. The fish strips tasted good with the sauce, and the shrimp chips also went well with the dip.

Yet the chef’s attempt to include everything in the plate created a unbalanced combination of flavor. The spicy chicken curry should have been the safest one to order, but the chicken was over cooked and tasted like paper. The fried chicken curry was good. Nevertheless, the green curry was a total disappointment: the sauce was plain and not tasty; what’s worse, the potato was undercooked inside and tasted hard and flavorless. The dessert (baked egg cake with custard inside) was pretty delicious though. It would be a plus if it hadn’t been served while we were still in the middle of the main dish.

Last but not least, the servers’ attitude was surprisingly poor. One of them said (not asked) she wanted to take away a plate on which there was still food, while another took away one other plate without asking or saying something at all. And we also waited for about 10 minutes to get a refill for our empty water bottle on the table.

Curry house in Hualien. Their curry tastes closer to Southeast Asian style. We waited for 30 mins on a weekday. The staff were busy but fairly responsive. Their fried fish, beef curry and chicken curry were tasty. Two orders out of three were lukewarm when they were served, but they made us a new one when we raised it.

I took off 1 star because they turned off the air conditioning and fans more than 20 minutes before closing, the temperature increased quickly and it felt stifling.
