Celebrated an early Christmas with my partner at this venue, unexpectedly, the experience blew me away. Wang Hing Hoi is supposed to be a fine dining make shift establishment. Never did I expect the interior of the restaurant to look like we will be dining in a magical forest. The interior has been laid out tastefully, the dim lighting provides just the right sense of privacy for the diners.
The exquisite plating, unusual combination of ingredients showcases the ingenuity of the Chef. At the start of the meal, he found us staring in puzzlement at one of the dishes and came over to explain that it is edible and invited us to try. It was brine ant eggs, and tasted like salty rice crispies, very interesting.
Throughout the experience we had a personal waitress who presented and explained the ingredients and making of each dish. Mid-way through the menu, the waitress came to tell us that our main course will be delayed, and served us a sorbet while we waited. The service provided was discrete and thoughtful, which I think is appropriate of such an establishment.
Wang Hing Hoi means fireflies in Thai, after the dinner, you could enter a viewing gallery which was completely dark and enjoy watching fireflies behind a pane of glass. As the restaurant was already rather dim, it was easy for our eyes to adjust to the change in lighting.
It was a pleasant experience dining at the restaurant, and I would recommend to visit the pop-up if you have the chance to go to Bangkok in the...
Read moreI’m Thai, and I’ve eaten Thai food my whole life — from humble street stalls to high-end restaurants. I know the dishes, the flavors, the textures. But Wang Hinghoi truly made me rethink everything I thought I knew about Thai cuisine.
Reading the menu, it sounds familiar: green curry beef. But when it arrived? It looked like it came out of a modern steakhouse — beautifully plated, topped with a foamy green curry sauce (not soup!). I usually don’t like sauce on beef, but this one? Mind changed.
Then came the red curry duck. I expected soup. Instead, I got a crispy confit duck leg sitting in the richest curry, bones sliding out effortlessly. Completely unexpected, and absolutely brilliant.
Tom yum kung — a dish the world already knows. But this version? It redefined it for me. Four-dimensional flavors, deep and vibrant, like nothing I’ve had before.
Even dessert was a surprise. Lod chong, usually a street dessert, came shaped like glowing fireflies, echoing the ones floating in the terrarium centerpiece. Magical in taste and presentation.
Chef Nick is a true artist. His sauces are next level. His respect for tradition and creativity in modernizing Thai cuisine is something rare and worth celebrating.
To the MICHELIN Guide — this place deserves a star. What’s happening at Wang Hinghoi is truly special, and the world should know. Although I know… once that star comes, getting a reservation will be even harder than...
Read moreWow...my first unhappy experience at a fine dining establishment. ( If we can call this place fine dining) So let me share you my story. I have heard about this place and always wanted to try so when I came across them at a Food event, I bought the voucher for the dinner ( 2 vouchers for 2 persons) . Pre-paid and all plus I got the cocktail pairing as a gift and I was told we could use it when we book the table. Fast forward several months later, I made a reservation, only to find out we can't use the cocktail pairing for this dinner. It will have to be for the next one. Ok..fine. Also asked about the menu. Was told different menus when called to ask. Even on the day, I was told it will be a different dish. This was supposed to be a good deal, since we pre-paid for the dinner, only to be serve with a limited choice and the mediocre option of the menu. The service was not up to standard on the day, I'm sorry. There were only 2 tables in the zone and 4 staff standing around, but they were not really paying attention. The dessert was a tiny scoop of ice-cream. Homemade and all but it made me question their whole menu choice. To be fair, the taste of the food is not bad, but definitely doesn't worth the hype and that voucher is over rated. Maybe the place used to be better before? Or did I just went there on...
