"During my recent trip to Chiang Mai, I had the opportunity to stay at the Khum Phaya Resort, and I must say that it was a truly unique experience. Before booking, I had read several Google reviews that mentioned the staff being rude and the rooms being dirty, which made me a bit apprehensive. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the opposite was true.
The staff at Khum Phaya Resort were incredibly polite and welcoming. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel at home, and their friendly demeanor set the tone for a wonderful stay. The rooms were well-maintained and clean, which was a huge relief given the negative reviews I had read.
One of the standout features of the resort is its traditional Thai architecture. The Old Thai House-style buildings are beautifully designed and maintained, giving guests a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. The resort's rustic charm and peaceful atmosphere make it an ideal retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
While the resort does show its age, and some renovation would be welcome, the character and charm of the place more than make up for it. However, one thing that did strike me as being in need of an upgrade was the TV in the room. At around 20-30 years old, it seemed a bit outdated, and I would recommend that the resort consider replacing it with a more modern model.
Despite this, the resort's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. One incident that really stood out to me was when I forgot my glasses in the room on the first day of our arrival. I called the reception, and they promptly sent them to me, demonstrating a level of professionalism and efficiency that impressed me greatly.
During our stay, we didn't experience any major issues, and the time we spent at the resort was remarkable. While we didn't spend a lot of time at the hotel, the moments we did spend there were truly special. The resort's peaceful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings made it an ideal place to relax and unwind.
One thing to note is that the resort is located about 15 minutes outside of the old town, which might make it less suitable for those who want to be in the heart of the action. However, if you're looking for a peaceful retreat or a place to escape the crowds, Khum Phaya Resort is an excellent choice.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend Khum Phaya Resort to anyone looking for a unique and peaceful experience in Chiang Mai. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the rooms are clean and well-maintained, and the resort's traditional Thai architecture is a real highlight. While it may not be the most modern or luxurious resort, its charm and character more than make up for it. If you're looking for a place to relax and unwind, Khum Phaya Resort is definitely worth...
Read moreJust stayed ten nights at this hotel this being my fourth stay in Thailand. This was for a family member's birthday, with her picking the hotel. The pool is for the most part very nice and a big part of the attraction for me. We had a pool access room which I would consider a must to maximise your enjoyment of this hotel. Rooms - the rooms could use a paint and freshen up. Our room had broken hinges on a couple of cupboard doors and some water damage to the ceiling in the bathroom that needs fixing. Probably not a lot of effort required to bring the rooms up to a more polished standard again. The verandah overlooking the pool was a nice place to sit and enjoy a drink or just relax. But take mosquito repellant and spray for the room as these insects were plentiful and we were there in dry season. || It's obvious that this resort was once more grand and polished and has fallen into a state of semi-dispepair, beyond the rooms. There were water features along the sides of the pool that look to have not functioned for a long time. There is a large pond with what looks to be a waterfall feature and water wheel, that is the same. This large still water pond is no doubt a source of the many mosquitos that are present. It's a shame these features have been left unrepaired. ||The restaurant is quite pretty inside and out and there was always plenty of eating. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast every day and there was enough to choose from, though like most such breakfast it gets repetative after several days. Though again, there is a range to choose from. We ate dinner and lunch in the hotel a few times and enjoyed everything we had. The pool bar is a nice place to talk to other travellers and to enjoy the pool, and we had cocktails there and enjoyed the 5-6PM two for one happy hour a number of times. Shout out to Sorn for his excellent cocktail and barman skills and hospitality in general! I have read other reviews that suggest staff were a bit of a let down or unpleasant - we experienced the exact opposite with all the staff being very pleasant and doing their jobs well. Stand out staff members were Sorn, Awon and the lovely lady at the tour desk (Suzie maybe?), but they were all very pleasant, polite and efficient. ||I will say from the outset that I had no interest in staying in the area due to it being removed from a main tourist area with minimal eateries and bars nearby. However, we utilised the Grab app to get transport for very reasonable prices and I would recommend this. A nice, newer model car into the Old City was only arund 115 baht or less, one way and it doesn't take long. We enjoyed our stay at Khum Phaya and had a ball...
Read moreIn case you are wondering why there are so many good Google reviews... The hotel rewards people with a 30% discount when giving a 5 stars review. Do I have to say more than this?
Anyway. I was... Quite disappointed by the hotel to say the least. We arranged an airport shuttle via the hotel which costed us 1.000,- THB. After arriving we noted that a taxi to the airport only costs 300 THB. We felt quite offended, taxi price information are very obviously displayed at the entrance... Really? Our question regarding price differences weren't answered.
Arrival was. Well we didn't felt very welcomed, rather the employees seemed kind of annoyed. We were offered a free room update which we declined because we wanted to keep the direct access to the pool.
The rooms are way older than pictured online and have significant signs of usure. The water doens't drain properly in the shower, water's up to your ankle quickly (and also floodes the floor when showering more than 3 minutes). Basically, the hotel is built in Lanna style, which is quite nice but the rooms turn out really dark. Room size is comfortable, but you can hear the cellphone of the people next door vibrating on their nighttable = walls are really thin. Water is really dirty. We restrained from using the whirlpool, as water was yellow and blurry.
There is an affiliated travel agency in the reception (caution! They don't belong together. When you want to book a taxi past 7pm you need to wait until the next morning when employees of the travel agency are back in the hotel. The hotel employees won't arrange a taxi for you). Tour prices are more expensive than the ones you can book in town.
There is a laundry service provided by the hotel. Information displayed on the leaflets in the room are higly misleading. A full bag of clothes = 1.000,- THB, when the bag is half full = 50% discount. But not on the 1.000,-, on the actual calculates prices per piece of cloth. Discount doens't include VAT and local taxes (of course, there is no such an information on the displayed leaflet. You'll get the surprise upon check-in out at the reception).
We weren't feeling comfortable at all and at the end we really were happy to leave.
By the way, our "taxi" (van was driven by an hotel employee) back to the airport only...
