We were looking for traditional food in Chaing Rai and found this place from Wongnai reviews, very impressed as soon as I walked in, loved all the simple decorations but creative and beautiful.
The menu is far from the original 100 years ago, apparently it’s a 3rd generation running the restaurant now. I quite like it though.
We were told that the food comes in small set one after next, probably 7-10 different dishes. We don’t need to order or finish them all, just tell them to stop serving when we feel full and they will charge us what we have ordered.
I asked “do we have to order these dish in particular order from 1st to the last too? “ I was told that I don’t need to and I can skip the dishes that I’m not keen on or don’t want to try.
My first dish was “Beef Khao Soi” which was nice, the 2nd dish from the list was “Northern style spicy sausage” and then 3rd dish from the list is “Nam Ngiao Noodles“
I wasn’t sure I would be too full if I had the spicy sausage before the Nam Ngiao Noodles as I very much wanted to try the noodles so I asked the waiter that would it be ok to have the noodles as my 2nd dish before the spicy sausage and if I still hungry then I will order the spicy sausage?
The answer from the waiter was “yes I certainly can” and if I still have more room then I can have the spicy sausage as my 3rd dish
So I ordered Nam Ngiao Noodles and it was also quite tasty. I still felt hungry so I then ordered spicy sausage.
The chef was passing our table while I I’m waiting for my spicy sausage so we had little chats. I complimented him of his creativity and told him that I was waiting for the sausage. He asked why didn’t I ordered them according to the list. I explained to him that I was told I don’t need to order in particular order 1st to 7th on the list. The chef ( I assume he was also an owner or manager) came across as little upset and said we are making it difficult for him and we are being difficult customers. He said “I will only allow you to have the spicy sausage then after that if we want more we have to go by 4th, 5th, 6th …. He was clearly unhappy and I felt bad and confused
I wouldn’t mind if that was the restaurant rule but what I do mind was that the inaccurate/different information from the waiter and the chef and as result, we were told off! It was an...
Read moreWhere to start? Everything about this restaurant is a rich experience! It can be a little hard to see from the outside, but when you step inside, it really does feel like you are stepping into a Khao Soi house with a long tradition. Not only delicious, but the food is so beautifully presented. A lot of care really goes into everything. Beef Khao Soi can be rare to find. Theirs was delicious! The beef just fell apart. I think it had been stewed overnight. I'm normally not a dessert eater. But the owner, Nat, talked us into it (he was incredibly friendly). We were so glad we accepted because it too was delicious and presented like little works of art. As we were leaving we got talking about coffee, which seems to be a side passion here. They make their own blend. The barista, (named Ban?) made us espresso and it was easily the best espresso I have had in my life. Somehow sweet, despite not being sweetened. Food, atmosphere, staff, all worthy of 5-stars! This is now on my list of top spots in Chiang Rai to...
Read moreAn amazing experience. It stands out as one of the best places to savor authentic Khao Soi in the city. The dish had a unique flavor profile, distinct from the fusion restaurants, and it wasn't overly sweet, which I appreciated. It's evident that they prioritize using top-quality ingredients, making the dish truly exceptional.
The service was top-notch; however, it's essential to plan ahead and make a reservation as they primarily cater to pre-booked customers and may not have immediate seating for walk-ins.
Their handcrafted flower tea was simply exquisite, offering a delightful and refreshing experience. Additionally, the signature coconut ice cream with espresso foam was an absolute treat. The fact that they use coconut from their own farm and source the espresso from their homegrown coffee beans adds a special touch to the dessert.
I highly recommend giving this place a try; the combination of superb Khao Soi, exceptional service, and unique beverages and desserts makes it a must-visit spot...
