Restaurang Bamboo bangtao — Restaurant in Choeng Thale

Located centrally in bangtao neighbourhood, maybe I expected more but if you are looking for simple and cheap, this could be it.

With a big street sign showing Gothenburg on “this direction” some 9000km away, Bamboo is possibly one of the Swedish owned establishments. An open plan restaurant is airy and cool. There is no indoor or outdoor and so your choice is either close to the street or even closer to the street. Remember there are cement trucks that use this road so it is not quiet.

The vast menu of steak, fish, sandwiches, salad, pizza, pasta oh AND Thai in my experience screams there is a risk that none of the cuisines are done well. Instead, give me a Chef who can deliver one with excellence. That’s enough. The range of pizza is very unusual, if you are feeling adventurous, maybe try the Africana (green curry sauce, banana…). However … the green curry was very runny and not spicy. Phad Thai was sticky and the prawns still had some of their inner guts. Garlic bread was hard. The spring rolls and fried rice were probably the best thing, again, keep it simple and it is hard to be disappointed.

The service was really slow and the restaurant was only half full. We waited 20mins for our order to be taken for drinks and our table of seven waited 45 minutes for all our meals to be served with the first ones at 30mins and then meals came out one by one over the next 15mins. Maybe there was an issue in the kitchen that night, I hope so. I don’t know how they would manage when it was busy.

My tip would be to keep the food orders simple, not be in a rush and to avoid drinks with ice. Both my kids had juices with ice cubes and both had upset stomachs overnight with vomitting.
