A party of 6 of us (myself and 5 adult Thais) went to Platoon on Saturday 3/9/2022 for lunch. I have never had such an unpleasant experience with surly staff in my life! Sour faced, unhelpful, and downright rude. Let me explain.
They brought the menu and one of our party asked in Thai very politely what they recommend. No answer from the middle aged waitress, just a glowering look as if to say, how dare you ask such a question. Oh well, we ordered the food to share Thai style. First came a bowl of rice on its own without a cover. Nothing else. We asked (of course in Thai) if we could have a cover for the rice to keep it warm. More dagger looks. She brought a plate to put on top of the rice, not the proper cover. OK the food came in a reasonable time. I thought it was quite good but the Thais were not very impressed with it, rating it a "5/10". The food prices were reasonable.
When we finished eating I had to frantically wave to another staff member for her attention, because our waitress was fully engaged with her mobile phone. So the bill came and I paid cash, but the staff members lingered about 2 meters away staring at the money, obviously eager to get a tip. Unbelievable! So I recognised what was happening and turned away to talk to someone, but the others told me the staff kept staring at the money. I kept chatting until they got fed up.
I must have had some brain aneurysm, because I actually left 20 baht tip. I must be mad. I want my money back !!
It's a great shame because the location by the sea is fine. But it's obvious the staff have had no training or underpaid or something, or they didn't care because the boss might have been away. It was very unusual for Thailand. It was not just one staff member, but all seemed disinterested.
And to top it all, 2 of us got diarrhea -- but although this is the only thing we had to eat coming from Bangkok, I cannot be certain of the source so this is an observation only.
I've been in Thailand for decades. The others were Thai. So we know the score here and "Thai Ways". I invite the owners to provide an explanation. Not very busy when we went, so no excuse there. Look at TripAdvisor for...
Read moreA long-time favorite, but timing is everything. We first visited Platoo Restaurant back in 2013, and it’s been completely transformed since then. The new setup is much larger, with expanded oceanfront seating that really lets you soak in the sea breeze and views—such a beautiful setting, especially being just next to the Regent Cha-Am and Novotel.
When we arrived this time, the restaurant was packed with a large tour group, which made the atmosphere feel a bit overwhelming. Unfortunately, that also meant many of the fresh seafood dishes were already sold out, which was disappointing.
We tried the crab leg curry, but it was far too spicy for our taste. The fried crab rice didn’t taste very fresh, and the overall Thai dishes felt just okay—not quite the quality we remembered from years past nor from a regular thai restaurant experience.
Still, the location is lovely, and when it’s less crowded, I imagine the experience could be more enjoyable. Maybe next time we’ll visit at a quieter hour and get a better taste of what...
Read moreBad hygiene, they don't dump their garbage (i dunno how often but the waste looked like it had been sitting there for a while) so the smell permeates the air while you dine. The owner seems to be mafia (or a head of the district or something in the area) so they can do whatever they want without a care for their customers or the environment. Not a sustainable restaurant whatsoever, a lot of noise pollution (restaurant was too noisy and noise levels were high well into the night) so don't even think about staying in their hotel and getting any rest. They have dried leaves as roofs for their kitchen so that's a fire hazard. Their kitchen is very close to tall trees as well, another fire hazard. If only they moved their kitchen area to a more open space. Bad...
