Sawasdee​ Rawai​ seafood — Restaurant in Rawai

Horrible racist experience. They treat you differently based on the color of your skin. If you are white you are treated like royalty, and ignored if not.

It was about 8PM. The restaurant was moderately seated. We stood at the front with a bag full of raw seafood for a while without anyone helping us. Then we wandered around the place looking for help and to be seated, etc. Received absolutely no help from anyone. Even though there were plenty of waitresses walking around.

As we were about to leave, a white couple approached, also with a bag of seafood to be cooked. A woman behind the counter gave a yell, then suddenly 7-8 waitresses appeared out of nowhere, all gathered with lightning speed and pulled out chairs and laid out table for them, and warmly invited them to sit.

I wondered if I had somehow become invisible to the staff there. At the time we had been wandering confusedly for 5 min at least, confused because all other restaurants in the Rawai market were all super eager to invite and pull in guests.

Before going to Phuket I've read online about different treatment they provide based on color of skin. I thought it was internet misinformation. Never thought it was...

At first, we thought it was a bit pricey—tourist trap maybe? But after checking out other spots, turns out the prices are pretty much the same everywhere. So we chose this one, because at least here, you get to enjoy your lunch with a view of Rawai’s laid-back fishermen on their boats.
