The walk from Surasak BTS station to Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla is about an hour. The directions fron google map led us thru narrow backlanes of residential areas. Would advise to take a cab from station or on your return trip to station as it may get too dark to walk back to station after meal. Seafood is fresh. We liked the Boiled Rice Soup with Red Grouper. Soup is light but sufficiently flavored by the ingredients which is pleasantly comforting. The fish slices are generously cut, meat is firm however we felt it is lacking a little on the natural sweetness of the fish, this could be more because of the day's catch. The Boiled Seafood platter is quite good too especially eaten with the sauce. We also had the Mung Bean Noodles baked in a mini pan with shrimp. This was a tad dry and lacks flavor for us. The Badeng is ok but taste is not uniquely impressive. Staff are friendly and helpful which makes the...
Read moreI’m utterly baffled as to how Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla has managed to snag the Michelin Bib Gourmand for six consecutive years. After my recent visit, I can only surmise that the award-givers must have had their taste buds somewhat impaired. The touted 400-baht (must have been the Micheline award talking) soup was a letdown, reeking of an overpowering fishiness that completely missed the mark on the umami front. As for the soy sauce pork, it was a study in blandness, lacking any depth of flavor. The salmon carpaccio, was equally uninspiring. Frankly, the only redeeming aspect of the entire meal was the Hoegaarden beer, which, let’s face it, wasn’t even their own creation. This experience was a stark reminder that not all that glitters is gold, or in this case, not all that’s Michelin-rated is...
Read moreWe came with some expectations this being a Michelin restaurant 7 years in a row. We ordered the boiled rice fish soup (Grouper). The fish was far from fresh, chewy, and the boiled rice soup had a texture and taste like something done in a rush without care. We received our food less than 5 minutes after ordering. The total price for two fish soups - 690 THB.
This is a disgrace and no where near the standard of a Michelin restaurant or any restaurant for that matter. Being a fan of good quality- and fresh food, I cannot recommend this place.
I hope however, that they will step up and try to earn back the Michelin they have received.
In the restaurants' defence, we didn't complain which we probably should have done, giving them a chance to correct...
