Interesting lunch exploring the alley ways of Bangkok. In a small lane off BTS station National Stadium, I stumbled on a small stall outside a cafe (it is part of the cafe and offers their food component).
Sign says “Kasemsan Rice ‘n Curry” (Soi Kasem San 1 is the name of the lane it’s located on). What caught my eye was a bunting by one side that said “Pad Thai Savoey”. Wonder if the lady who looked like she owned the stall has worked for Savoey before? Alas, a young man (her son perhaps), fried my plate of noodles.
I’m not a fan of Pad Thai but I am a big fan of the food at Savoey. A “grand old dame” of Thai seafood restaurants.
So I plonked myself down and gave the dish a try. Had Pad Thai “Kung” (Prawns).
Dish comes with an interesting twist. In addition to the raw bean sprouts (which I have never liked), they offer a side of green raw/sour mango. Yummy!
I think the prawns are fried separately in some tamarind paste. I love it! The noodles were of a slightly wetter style of cooking than many other places. Lots of taufu bits mixed with the Pad Thai, which you see once you unwrapped the egg “crepe” cover.
Noodles lacked “wok hei” but tasted good.
Ratings:
Noodles - 8 for taste, 7 for texture and 6 for wok hei - so let’s average that as a 7
Prawns - a solid 8. Not a 9 as the heads didn’t seem to have much roe or flesh.
The taufu bits and bean sprouts were forgettable but the shredded green mango was wicked! So overall another 7 for the vegetable component.
Think an overall 7/10 is fair. I enjoyed my meal but it isn’t a dish I’d drag all of my friends to...
Read moreMy local cafe, and having been away for five weeks, I am pleasantly surprised to see how popular and busy it has become.
Not really a surprise because Sip n Drip ticks these key boxes: very good coffee for a reasonable price (cappuccino 80 baht, americano 70 baht) super central city location just 5 minutes walk from MBK and BACC gallery warm, friendly service - I think it’s a family business clean, cool interiors a good selection of mostly Thai craft beers (bottle and on tap) excellent home cooked Thai food that is great value and quality for the price. Kao kluk kapi is my go to dish
I don’t think you need any more reasons to grab a cup of Joe, or a glass of beer here - a true...
Read moreTucked away in a side alley across from the MPK, next door to the LiT hotel. Serving a small selection of meals, coffee by the machine in the morning and drip coffe and craft beer in the afternoon. We had a chicken teriyaki which came in a fair size and was quite tasty. I gave the meal a 7.5/10 and my daughter gave it a 9/10. She also had a caramel milk and rated it....what you would expect a caramel milk to taste like (teenagers). Came back the next morning to try their coffee as they open at 7.30am which is convenient for us...plus just next door to our accommodation. We came back to try their Specialty Coffee the next morning. Grabbed my dark roast latte and.......... 8.1/10...
