Overpriced, bland food - why the good reviews?
I base the following review entirely on the expensive price of the dishes/drinks.
The restaurant seemed to be in a sort of limbo between wannabe fine dining and a disco, with the overbearing staff anxious to tinker and move around plates and glasses between each progressively louder song.
I had high expectations of the food based on the price. I chose the restaurant's signature meat mussakka, which was unfortunately quite bland and oily, with tasteless veg. It wasn't horrible by any stretch of the imagination, but very average. At 70(ish) lira a portion, I would rather walk up the street and get a handful of kebabs.
The other dishes our table were also poor. The paella was as luminously yellow as it was average, with frozen seafood and a lack of seasoning. The vegetarian mussakka was literally the same dish without the meat or anything to compensate for the flavour. The chef could really do with tasting these dishes before they go out. Perhaps adding more herbs and spices to the food instead of sticking a massive inedible stick of rosemary in each dish would be a good idea.
19 lira for a small Efes. The portion of garlic bread was two small pieces.
Left feeling dissatisfied. The restaurant aspires to be classy and a bit of fine dining, and the prices reflect that, but it doesn't live up to the expectations it sets itself. If this food was in a little family run place at 1/3 of the price it would be absolutely fine, but when it comes to Mussakka Restaurant I strongly recommend you try some of the other good food...
Read moreVery disappointing after everyone said it's 'great food'. I have been to many fine dining restaurants, and this is definitely not one of them. I look back now and laugh, purely out of disbelief. The penne was still wet and was probably tossed into the chicken and tomato sauce for a couple of minutes, as it was lacked any flavour. Very disappointing with the food, sorry.
Staff here were friendly and food arrived promptly.
Not worth the price with the low...
Read moreWe've been coming to Mussaka for years. It's a place where you feel like home. Kind-hearted people who know what they're doing. Everything is done with passion. The food is simply fantastic, and the appetizer bread is by far the best in all of Kalkan. I really hope they don't change their ways, like some other restaurants in town that are only interested in profit....
