An inviting pub in the Old Aberdeen Campus popular for its darts tournaments which also draws in a large crowd of both locals and students to watch any major sports on the TV. A large crowd by St Machar's standards is different from most pubs however as it the smallest drinking spot I've come across so far in the city, with its stretched oblong bar shape offering limited seating space which can mean it often feels very busy even when there are only a handful of people in, this can be taken as a pro or a con depending on how you like it.

The pub has a smokers area round the back with shelter and inside the decor of the pub harks back to simpler times, with photos and drawings on the wall showing Aberdeen in its formative years as a major city.

The staff have always been extremely nice and friendly, providing a laugh a joke whenever I've came in from the rain for a quick one. Drinks are reasonably priced too with student discount available also.

Food was very good before when it was run by the pub, then texmex took over and changed the menu to burritos which was different but a perfect treat after a long day, they've now moved on so I can't say for sure how the food is now but if it's anything like the pre-texmex days it will still be tasty.

Recommend for both students...

If you're either an urban rural explorer, college, or University student, or even just a random /local punter(customer) just popping in for the old school pre nostalgic and relaxed semi-gothic fun-loving pub lifestyle, without having to go into the city centre, or outwith even,

Then I suggest you come into the great and few older Bars in Old Aberdeen, for a cheese toastie, chips 🍟, different varieties of crisps, and of course the Use of a 🎶 juke box, between the bar and corridor of the toilets 🚻 😉 and yes All v.i.p sport's are shown, aswell as your music channel, or whatever your choices are, STUDENTS DISCOUNT AVAILABLE 😉, NEED TO SHOW YOUR EITHER COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY I.D CARD,

But, also around the university grounds and outwith the St. Machar bar, is the cathedral, clock tower, library, Seaton Park, and multiple other shops cafés and the Red Lion 🦁 aka the beastie, which has a private quiet old school royal green leather chair just upstairs for...

St Machar Bar is my "local", and I have been a regular since I moved to Aberdeen 15 years ago. Given its location in the middle of Old Aberdeen where the University of Aberdeen has its main campus, it is a favourite watering-hole for university employees and students. Most of the regular clientele fall into at least one of three groups - university staff, students (particularly mature and postgraduate) and local residents (often with a university connection). The pub features four handpumps selling real ale, and is in the latest edition of the Good Beer Guide. It also has an excellent selection of...

Wow, the location of this bar is amazing!! Close to King's College and Aberdeen University. The 18th century bar is in period with the surrounding buildings and cobbled Street. Quite a walk from the city centre but well worth the effort. Seems like hundreds of whisky's were on offer at the bar, along with three real ales, which were all on top form! Very busy on matchday when I visited (Aberdeen FC).

Famous for a reason. Right in the middle of old architecture this small pub sports local taps that include several nitro and three cask conditioned. Also registered with CAMRA Their Whisky selection is incredible and the staff know a lot about their collection. Everything is reasonably priced and everyone was friendly. A must stop place.
