An inviting pub in the Old Aberdeen Campus popular for its darts tournaments which also draws in a large crowd of both locals and students to watch any major sports on the TV. A large crowd by St Machar's standards is different from most pubs however as it the smallest drinking spot I've come across so far in the city, with its stretched oblong bar shape offering limited seating space which can mean it often feels very busy even when there are only a handful of people in, this can be taken as a pro or a con depending on how you like it.
The pub has a smokers area round the back with shelter and inside the decor of the pub harks back to simpler times, with photos and drawings on the wall showing Aberdeen in its formative years as a major city.
The staff have always been extremely nice and friendly, providing a laugh a joke whenever I've came in from the rain for a quick one. Drinks are reasonably priced too with student discount available also.
Food was very good before when it was run by the pub, then texmex took over and changed the menu to burritos which was different but a perfect treat after a long day, they've now moved on so I can't say for sure how the food is now but if it's anything like the pre-texmex days it will still be tasty.
Recommend for both students...

But, also around the university grounds and outwith the St. Machar bar, is the cathedral, clock tower, library, Seaton Park, and multiple other shops cafés and the Red Lion 🦁 aka the beastie, which has a private quiet old school royal green leather chair just upstairs for...
Read moreSt Machar Bar is my "local", and I have been a regular since I moved to Aberdeen 15 years ago. Given its location in the middle of Old Aberdeen where the University of Aberdeen has its main campus, it is a favourite watering-hole for university employees and students. Most of the regular clientele fall into at least one of three groups - university staff, students (particularly mature and postgraduate) and local residents (often with a university connection). The pub features four handpumps selling real ale, and is in the latest edition of the Good Beer Guide. It also has an excellent selection of...
