Gotta love Georges. This place has loads going for it, I think key to this is that it's always busy so the food is always super fresh. But the Belper site has a charm far beyond your typical chippy.
Attached to the counter service side is a small and charming restaurant with table service. You pay a little more for the privilege, but with meal deals including tea from a tea pot (or coffee, but why you'd drink coffee with a chip dinner I've no idea). You can also grab a beer as the place is licenced!
At peak periods you'll be waiting for a table but time it right and you'll be enjoying super fresh, hot fish and chips with bread and butter and a cuppa in no time. Service is quick too.
It's a far superior experience than the recent trend of chip shops opening in pub like spaces (or pubs themselves as Georges has elsewhere), its a charming and unique venue. That's not due to the decor, which is smart and clean, or the ambience especially.
They do children's meals too, the mini fish served with these is as high quality as the main meals, light batter and chunky fresh fish inside, puts kids meal staple fish fingers to shame.
Oh and puddings too, which may be good if you have a large appetite as the chip portions can be a little on the smaller side.
Bar that criticism and it being a touch too small, if there are more than a couple of babies in highchairs, things can get cramped, then George's in Belper is a...
Read moreWent today to find click and collect only with a 40 minute wait. So went on the website and selected what we wanted, I then had to register....registered and it deleted my entire order, so had to log out and redo my order. To finish my order I had to confirm my email or phone number, so chose phone. It sent two texts put both numbers in and kept coming up incorrect, so pressed back and it had somehow miraculously worked. It then said an order number and time...but also said I would receive a text and until I received that there was no garuntee I was getting my food. 20 minutes went past and I tried to ring to make sure I was getting my food and all I got was we are not taking phone calls. Went back after 40 minutes and there was quite a large queue, people who had a collection time of 6 were still waiting for there food when I got mine at 6:10.
Get the food home (approx 6 minutes) and the chips tasted of cleaning products (guessing they cleaned the vats and didn't wash out properly) the batter on the fish goujons was hard and chewy and the peas were watery.
Usually they are very good, but this was a real disappointnent, especially with all the click and collect website which seems to be...
Read moreI’d like to say the other reviews for this place are slightly misleading. We decided to order online in the hope that it would help the team out, but in fact the order wasn’t ready when we arrived. A number of items we had ordered were unavailable, so alternatives were offered / refund - which is fine, but would be better if these were made unavailable on the website. When I arrived, the young lad sorting our order was very inexperienced, but fine with that as long as the end result in adequate. He hung about the counter for a while waiting for the manager to come and sort our refund (for the items unavailable) but instead of asking him to help, he instead stood at the other side of the counter until he telepathically connected with the manager. It took a quick walk around the back and a wash of his hands before he got his attention to sort out refund. We left with what we thought was our complete (after unavailable items) order. On arriving back home, no curry sauce or peas were included in the bag. Extremely disappointing and to top it off, poor fish and chips. I would recommend that the manager sorts the team out because this ordeal was...
