West Beach Café — Restaurant in Arun

Havn't been here for ages so thought it high time to make the effort to drive down. Got parked in disabled space nearby so good start. It is tiny but luckily not too busy (Monday afternoon) so my friend and I got seated ok. Food choice for lunch is mainly fried fish, we ordered whitebait with garlic mayo, salt and pepper squid with chilli sauce and sides of sweet potato chips and onion rings. There was a small bit of greenery in the form of some rocket under the fish which was nice. When the sides arrived they were huge portions!!! We had a glass of rose each (would probably have worked out cheaper to buy the whole bottle), and I had a coffee. Views are great if you sit on the higher chairs/stools around the walls & windows or outside, limited if you sit at the lower tables inside. Customer toilet is disabled friendly on the inside, it's along a short section of decking behind the cafe. This used to be a lovely cafe. However when there yesterday, I thought it was appalling. Was refused a cup of coffee at 10.50 (even though a lady was there and everything was open) as they don't open until 11. I waited 10 minutes for my coffee it and it was just instant as the machine had broken a few days earlier and they hadn't had the chance to fix it! A croissant or pastry of some kind would have been nice, but only a couple of chocolate bars available. Very limited menu. When returning just before 5 to buy ice creams for the family, it was all closed up! The furniture is sad as was the lady working there who looked like she'd rather be anywhere else. I've intended visiting this café for a long time but always just stared at it from across the river. Finally the kids are old enough to cycle across from home. Sadly the end result isn't as great as expected. The staff were friendly and the prices are ok but the cafe has definitely seen better days. The surviving external furniture is broken and dirty and the inside of the cafe is well past a revamp. It may be clean but doesn't look it with staff, food, cleaning equipment etc all jammed in behind the counter. This place could be great but needs...
