Soul Kitchen & Bar — Restaurant in Arun

I'm gutted to be leaving this review, and looking at other comments, perhaps we just got an off night. But I'm leaving this review, with lots of detail because I love Littlehampton and we were really excited when this place opened. I really want it to succeed, it has the decor, the service and views to smash it. But 8 of us ate there last night and the food was really poor. I ordered the small plates "meze" - chorizo "bites", calamari and whitebait. The chorizo turned out to be just small chorizos, grilled black on one side. No oils, or sauces or onions etc. Both the calamari and the whitebait were in a kind of dusty crumb so thick it was hard to find the squid. Again, no sauces or dips etc were served with them. All of the guys ordered the ribs - at £19.50 I thought that was fairly pricey, but assumed it would be a blowout. The plates came with 3 ribs! 3! not a rack, not even half a rack, 3! With a small serving of chips that barely covered the small plate and a heap of "soulslaw" that was just coleslaw. My son and his friend (18 and huge) nearly ordered another meal, they were still hungry. Soul food is generous! These prices aren't at the low end, these have to be the BEST ribs, the BEST meze etc. And the menu doesn't really reflect the soul vibe at all. We booked a table here as we had travelled from Blackpool and wanted to ensure we had a booking, the team accommodated this even though it’s not usual to book a table for 2 people. The atmosphere was rocking when we arrived, full of people chatting and the music pumping. Our food was good and reasonably priced.

Here’s where this place was AMAZING . . . We sat downstairs on a little sofa built into an alcove. My phone dropped down the side and could not be retrieved!! Within 10 minutes they had contacted the chap who fitted out the restaurant, he removed the bottom panel from the sofa and pulled out my phone! Unbelievable service. They were super kind and jovial about it. Lovely people!

Very disappointing experience celebrating a friends birthday her.e yesterday. Tasteless chips, really thick batter on fish making it look twice as big as it was. 8 of us dined here yesterday and after the meal and singing Happy Birthday to our friend we started to cut the cake which had been made by one of us. A waitress appeared and told us we could not eat the birthday cake there. Over the years our group has visited hundreds of restaurants to celebrate birthdays,always taking our own cake and have NEVER, ever been forbidden to eat it on the premises. So be warned everyone. Totally spoilt my friends birthday and we will not be returning...
