My birthday- in my favourite place in the world and my favourite pub…. Until tonight. Having dined here over 30 times+ I attended with the usual expectations from an established reputation. My party of 6 were greeted by dirty toilets and an empty ish pub (about 30%) occupied- if that. After years and years and years of having to book or being turned away I was shocked. Normally you have to shimmy past other diners but tonight we practically had the place to ourselves. (Booked this months ago with knowing its reputation and the music festival) This alone should demonstrate to the owners that something is drastically wrong. We don’t mind paying high prices whatsoever for good food but this is pub grub at its best now and is still being charged at restaurant prices. In fact, we enjoyed Barmouth kebab and pizza better! The booze was ok and the one choice vegetarian curry was ok - can’t really go wrong with cauliflower and red pepper curry tbf. Anything else was inadequate, not just the chewy steak with tasteless sauce and minuscule prawns but also the chicken burger; had better frozen at home. If you like paying top whack for frozen, crap food then this is for you but I’d advise going to Iceland and saving yourself. Such a shame coz the building, location and pub itself is amazing. I don’t normally review but this needs to be addressed because it’s just not right. Sort it out Last Inn, this is now my Last time! Other people will soon be the same and it’ll be even more “ghost” than it was tonight. I can only imagine that the excuse of the dispute with the butcher (after researching other reviews this seems to be the common excuse) I can only imagine they have chosen a cheaper supplier at the absolute detriment to the, what once was, an incredible...
Read moreFirst of all this is a fantastic, historic pub that is an important piece of Barmouth heritage and is very popular. Cozy and unique inside. Everything you want a Welsh pub to be. The problem is the management choices. We tried to ring ahead five times the week leading up to our visit and nobody ever answered. When we did visit - no real ale tasters - first issue - any real ale enthusiast needs to be able to ensure the ale is being cared for sufficiently in the cellar before committing to a pint. The management claim they lose too much ale per annum providing this service. Second of all the food serving is provided on a non reservation system. Previously they allowed people to book tables however this is now replaced by a 'buzzer' arrangement whereby you stay inside or outside and you are buzzed when a table is ready. This can be up to two hours. Once your table is ready this does not mean you are able to order food. This can be another hour on top. The great benefit of this for the establishment is that you have to stay on site, paying and drinking, before you are finally able to order food. The staff behind the bar openly admitted to this being more chaotic than the previous traditional table booking arrangement which works for everywhere else in the country. Pair this with the fact that somehow a few tables had managed to actually be reserved despite no reservations being allowed, means that the management seriously need to rethink their service. Iconic locations like this deserve a proper and justified operation and despite it being a brilliant pub and restaurant, there are gross misjudgements as to how to run the last inn during busy seasons. We will visit again in the hope that things change. We sincerely hope...
Read moreFabulous place in a gorgeous town. Amazing food, great decor... with an extra special Halloween twist. Even the dog tried to get in on the action, if only he mastered the tail! Love that dogs are welcome, would highly recommend and have already visited multiple times and will be back! Couldn't fault The Last Inn, well done guys! 👏
After coming here for 25+ years and always LOVING it, tonight I’m sad to add that the pub was very neglected and the food was mediocre at best. Steak was chewy, pepper corn sauce more like a roux, very, very bland and more like a base sauce. Vegetarian curry was different but still nice, although in 2025 I’d expect a better variety of choice for vegetarian/vegan. Also, pub has always been rammed and it was so unusually dead- a definite reflection of its current standards, so much so that my favourite pub is now nicknamed “The Ghost Inn” never have I ever seen it so quiet. So very disappointed. £207 for 6 people and was more like worth £80 being generous. The toilets were disgusting, toilet paper on floors and over flowing from the bins. The dust on the radiator was an inch thick- when I showed the staff they simply stated that they had the same cleaner for 20 years; to which I replied that she clearly hadn’t cleaned it for that 20 said years!!! Not good enough at all, you’re very privileged to be where you are, where is your pride in service? Not even an apology or an incentive to return. The town is stunning but hosts need to realise that that alone will not keep us coming back- we expect and deserve a decent service and produce or close your doors and move over so someone who actually cares...
