Hearing the name Wombwell (pronounced Wum-well) may cause a titter, especially with the name Penistone being another giggle inducing name for a village in the Barnsley district. What does not induce mirth is the natural beauty surrounding this village. With the Pennines close by, easy links to the M1 and A1, cycling routes and bus transport enabling you to get to here and enjoy the area.
Unfortunately there is a blight on the local scene which I am sad to say is The Horseshoe pub. Having been here three times within the past 6 weeks I am able to give this low rating, let down by the kitchens alone.
The pub is welcoming, the staff friendly but the food is disappointing.
Having been in once in November and ordered burgers for my and my friend I was disappointed by my Mexican burger without the guacamole, cheese or salsa, they had put on the Jalapeños however, my friends burger was saturated on the bottom with barbecue sauce. A brief ‘is everything all right’ while eating and the lady just left. I received an apology letter and an invite back for me plus one, this time we ordered from the steak club menu. While an improvement there was no question of the steak temperature, and as such my steaks were mid-well done and I prefer mid-rare. Not too big a deal but at least everything came out as it should have.
Today’s experience has confirmed that this pub is low on the quality meter I ordered a classic chicken burger which came out in just over 5 minutes, smelled and tasted as though it had been re-heated in a microwave, with chips that were cooked but cool.
If you are thinking of going here in the future I would advise against this, there are better Wetherspoons, other chains and independents not far away.
My apologies to people who enjoy this pub food, but I have not been impressed...

First off, it was filthy. Tables where left uncleared and not wiped down for the whole hour and a half we where there, we found the cleanest table we could find and then had to go looking for menus. Bathrooms where also disgustingly dirty as well, it looked like a bunch of 9 year olds had trashed the place. Water everywhere, stank and loo roll on the floor. Not clean at all.
Food, first off they put our order through wrong ordering a side portion of scampi (despite us asking to make sure the portion we ordered came with regular peas, something a side portion of scampi wouldn't come with) rather than the main portion we wanted. The pizza was cold the moment it got to the table, fortunately it was for a kid but still would be nice for hot food to arrive. Burgers where average. Chips could use a bit of improvement. We ordered dessert which was actually alright but the ice cream had already mostly melted when it got to us. Clearly there is to much of a delay between food being plated up and getting to the table given the cold pizza and melted ice cream.
Overall I'd not recommend coming here, there are better places to eat only a short drive away and we wish we went to...
Read moreI'm not usually a fan of "Chain Pubs" but I can't fault it. It does exactly what it says on the tin. The food is cheap but nice, the service is quick, efficient and very polite. The quality of the drinks for the price is fantastic. Had two meals and two alcoholic drinks for £19. Yes some of it is probably microwaved but for the price I can't complain. I had a curry and it had lots of taste and plenty of chicken. I also like that the menu states the calories and allergy information. The place is clean, a tad old fashioned but I can live with that. I'm not sure what it's like later in in the evening, but for a quick evening meal at teatime I couldn't fault it. The only complaint my partner has is sachet sauces, he hates them. I don't use them so it's...
