The Manhattan — Restaurant in Barnsley

Have been previously, shortly after it first opened, so this review will be about that visit + something else at the end.

First of all, it smells like a cellar, the stools by the window are probably as uncomfortable as it gets, and sitting at a table was only slightly better as despite being new, the table wobbled about a lot which was annoying. Very cramped space with little seating.

Aesthetically, it's alright, the jukebox and the lighting, however the worn-look furniture doesn't suit the American diner style it's seemingly going for, and at the time it was filled with very old customers. Just didn't do the atmosphere any favours at all.

The food was okay, but for what you get, a little on the pricey side. The owner was very chatty and open about his vision for the place, which was great.

Sadly, today, it never seems to be open and with no communication or signs of life, I feel it may never open it's doors again, which would be a shame as there's a lot of potential.

Great idea and a good location, just needs modern furniture, that old smell needs sorting out, upstairs and outside/to the side furnished for more seating, and the signage outside needs illuminating as even when it was open, it looked shut.

Hopefully one day it opens again, all these issues are sorted out and I can delete this review and replace it...

What a disaster. They have a lot to learn about food service and customer service! We ordered two chicken mint yoghurt wraps, which come with fries. One arrived after 10 minutes and then the other exactly same meal came out another 15 minutes later! Why?! When one staff member came midway through our wait to apologise for the wait we said we were on a schedule as we had to go to work. When they finally brought the food the server then said they had felt attacked by this comment?! Really rude! Didn't stop to speak when we tried to ask why the same meal took so long to cook. The poor ladies opposite us came in and ordered a cup of tea, their table wasn't cleared the entire time they were waiting (20 minutes)! The place really smells of fried food too - sort the extractor fans out! Real shame as it has potential to be nice but it is poor food, greasy chips and slapped together wrap with a couple of pieces of cucumber, and a chopped up chicken breaded breast. As we were leaving the lady finally got her tea, and the server said she had been manic all morning so hadn't cleared the table, but the other two tables us and another were served and she had been on her phone for the last ten minutes!!! New place in style of American dinner. Ordered a Philly steak & cheese wrap with fries to collect. Food was ok but was more in the style of English cafe food than North American. Chips were English chip shop style but with seasoning and a few weren’t cooked properly. Price seemed above average for what it was. Service was quick and looks tidy inside. Probably give it another go and try out the breakfasts as maybe still...
