I discovered my love for five guys through my American girlfriend last year. I’ve been to many different venues across the country and I was always impressed by the freshness of the food, the consistent of the service and the quality. Sadly this was our second trip to the Basingstoke store and it was disappointing both times.
The first time we wrote of as a bad day seeing as they’d just opened up. On that trip the store was just in a bit of a mess, sticky marks on the surfaces and tables, even though they have just opened, wet patches all over the floors and I had to ask twice before I could get any condiments. The drink machine was busted and was giving out flavourless drinks, they attempted to fix it, but we ended up with flavourless drinks three times and then gave up. the food was fine, but felt a little slack together. Slightly lower quality presentation than we were used to. But again it was early in the day and they’d just opened so we tried not to think on it too much.
However, when we came in today, things got even worse. There wasn’t a single customer in the store when we arrived so we thought this is great, we will get really fast attentive service as there’s nobody else around. We made our order with the polite guy behind the counter, then went away to grab a drink and condiments. Thankfully at least one of the drinks machine was working this time, but the floor was soaking wet and sticky all the way round the machine. I had to ask for condiments again as they hadn’t been put out. Strange seeing as this was at 14:30 in the afternoon.
We then went to find ourselves a table. We had to check roughly six or seven tables before we found one that was even vaguely clean and settled for wiping it down ourselves before sitting. The food was announced at the collection point in a reasonable amount of time, so I went up and grabbed it. A few mouthfuls into my burger. I realised there was no bacon in it, even though I’d ordered a bacon cheeseburger. I went back up to the counter to explain this to the guy at the grill, returned to the other guy working further down the line ground a few handfuls of broken bacon, put it in a foil tin and hand it to me. I wasn’t really impressed with this level of service as I didn’t even receive an apology or an offer to remake the burger for me. I’d had enough at this point so I walked away. The grilled cheese me and my girlfriend both ordered was far below the usual standards at any other branch. Undercooked and not cut in half.
Overall quite a disappointing experience for a company we hold in high regard. Needless to say will never be returning to the Basingstoke store. I just hope the standards don’t slip in any of the other...
Read moreI typed a review months ago about a complete meal and burger wise, I have not tried again, so I cannot comment on that, this is solely on a milkshake review. My previous review also included a milkshake, which I said it was very good, amazing, incredible, it was actually a chocolate and peanut butter milkshake. Then another time, I went to get the new Reese's peanut butter milkshake, expecting it to be a proper milkshake made with Reese's, but to my disappointment and from my point of view, false advertising, it was just a plain vanilla/cream milkshake with Reese's bits, which you could hardly taste. I wrote to Five Guys about my experience and they sent me a voucher for a free milkshake, so I tried again, this time going for a "safe option". I ordered the chocolate peanut butter but peanut butter was not available so I swapped to chocolate and oreo's. The milkshake I was served, was just plain vanilla/cream milkshake with some oreo bits, it was not chocolate based and did not taste like chocolate, so this was my Reese's experience all over again. I did not bother to complain but my disappointment was huge. I do not know if they made a mistake and gave me a plain shake, not chocolate one, but it seems Five Guys are just making plain shakes with a hint flavoring, they now taste plain, like a KFC Krushem's but at a price of a proper milkshake, which is not. It is a big shame GBK is no longer there, their Oreo shake did taste like Oreo. People, save your monies, do not get a milkshake, unless you like them plain. I regret not taking a picture now but the shake was almost white, which a chocolate one...

Visited Five Guys in Festival Place, Basingstoke today with my 10-year-old daughter for what was meant to be a special daddy-daughter treat. We ordered two burgers, a milkshake, a Coke, and one large fries — came to just over £35. Unfortunately, it was far from the quality we expected.
The fries were awful — dark brown, almost burnt, with an unpleasant taste and texture. I raised the issue with staff straight away, and while they did bring out another portion, it was exactly the same. No improvement at all. It felt like a waste.
I appreciate that Five Guys promotes using fresh ingredients and not having freezers, but whatever process they’re using for the fries clearly isn’t working. Whether it was old oil, high sugar content in the potatoes, or poor cooking standards, the result was inedible. Even my daughter — who usually loves chips — barely touched them.
When I voiced my concerns, the response was dismissive. I was told I should’ve said something before leaving — which I did. It felt like they just didn’t care.
Left feeling sick, heavy, and very disappointed. A real shame, especially for the price paid. Sadly, we won’t be returning.
