Very disappointing and terrible value
While the staff were friendly and helpful and the venue wasn’t too bad though not warranting the prices charged here. The fish and chips at £ 26 per portion were so greasy that the paper they were served on pretty much disintegrated from the excess fat. After fighting through the thick batter there was a tiny sliver of fish in the middle. We have had much better from local high street take always at a fraction of the price. The chateaubriand was reasonably pleasant, which was reassuring since it cost £85 for 2, though really, for the money, this was nothing special.
The dessert was a farce. I was really looking forward to a caramelised banana, as described in the banana split but instead got a plain banana that had been but in half and scorched on the flat side. No sign of any caramelisation at all, just burnt. The ice cream was cheap shop bought vegan version and very lack lustre with some cheap glacé cherries on top. It couldn’t have been much worse. Shame that the food was such a let down here and we were very disappointed considering the high prices. We were even overcharged for an already overpriced cocktail, £28 instead of £24.
I would highly recommend going elsewhere and...
Read moreOur first visit (Sept 28th)… apologies for the tardiness of my review! What to say other than ‘wow!’ and “thank you”… when you learned it was our anniversary all of the staff were kind enough to write and present us with a beautiful card with such kind words… this topped off what was a really lovely evening with super food and excellent (red) wine and champagne! The setting is lovely and actually quite romantic (considering it’s actually converted from an old stables… not somewhere that one might immediately call ‘romantic’… but it was). We were celebrating 36 years of ‘togetherness’ and even now I simply cannot think of somewhere we would rather have been that evening/night. Cliveden is simply marvellous - a beautiful setting where ladies & gentlemen (or two gentlemen in our case) were treated like we were two gentlemen. First class food, served at a suitable pace, and accompanied by great wine choices and really pleasant conversations with the team members as well. We’ve had a hectic couple of months but we definitely will be back soon (early in the new year)… and just writing that energises me to get a table booked soon! Thank you again for the wonderful evening!...
Read moreWe were very disappointed with our whole experience at Astor grill. We booked our table in advance for Easter, and was not told about the Easter set menu. We were looking forward to eat off the a la carte menu, and it was disappointing to be offered such a poor set menu for £90. The quality of the food wasn’t reflected in the price. One of our guest was vegetarian, and was served roasted cauliflower for his main course. That is not acceptable for a £90 course set menu. I also ordered a soup for starters but again it wasn’t reflected in the price. The desserts served were tiny portions. The reason we chose to eat at the Astor grill was to have a more relaxed meal, however had we known that there was an Easter menu for £90 we would have chosen to eat at the main restaurant which had a much better menu for £100, that was more reflective of the price. We go to cliveden house every Easter and have was disappointed with the quality this time. The staff were relatively polite but were not fully accommodating. We even asked to eat the food from the main restaurant, but we’re told no. This is not something we expected from a hotel of...
