Update at end of original review…
Original review: They’ve got a spacious indoor dining area with comfortable seating and clean enough toilets. More attention could be paid to wiping the tables and chairs however. There was some sort of liquid on the chairs. But instead of standing around and asking someone to see to it, we helped ourselves to the cleaning spray by the bin and cleaned them ourselves. Staff are well mannered however… probably too busy serving food to pay attention to soiled furniture. That takes me to the food. Their cod is absolutely beautiful. The only fish I’ve liked after Khan’s (Ladypool rd). Unfortunately, the chips were a big let down - hence the three stars. They were weirdly hard. Similar texture to salad potatoes. For that reason my family isn’t willing to eat there again. But I’m willing to pop in at some point to see if there’s been any change - cuz I genuinely like their cod. So if you are reading this Cod City, please sort the chips out. Maybe it was a one off. But it’s put my family off for life. Please check out Khan’s chips. If you can make them anything like theirs, I’m sure I’ll be able to change my family’s mind.
Update: In my original review I mentioned the soiled table and chips bring hard. It’s nice to see my concerns were taken on board. Well done for that Cod City. When my mum said she wanted fish and chips recently, I sent my cousin there because the fish is the best I’ve had. Because I placed the order for collection by phone, I mentioned the chips being hard and was assured that had been taken on board. I am happy to say the chips definitely were better this time round. But unfortunately they weren’t one hundred percent to my liking. Maybe I just like the soft melt in the mouth chips better 🤔 My cousin really liked them and we all absolutely loved the fish. It’s the one thing I’m not willing to share. I’d happily buy someone their own, but don’t even look at mine. That’s how much I love it. The other thing I wish that was offered with the cod is tartare sauce.
So anyone reading this, if you’re a cod and chips fan, please pay this place a visit. You won’t be disappointed. If I remember from the last their lamb donner is great too.
P.S. Oh and don’t bother with khan’s anymore. Their fish has gone downhill. Grey and mushy. Definitely won’t be going...
Read moreI recently had the opportunity to visit Cod City in Birmingham, and I must say, it's a hidden gem tucked away in a residential area. Finding parking was a bit of a mission due to the small one-way street, but once I made my way to the restaurant, I was greeted by friendly Arab staff who made me feel welcome.
One thing that immediately caught my attention was the prices on the menu. In a time when the cost of living is on the rise, Cod City offers a refreshing change with all their dishes priced at £4 or less. This affordability is definitely a major plus point for anyone looking for a budget-friendly meal.
Cod City specialises in serving Halal comfort food, catering to those who follow a Halal diet. While the atmosphere and ambiance may not be extraordinary, the focus here is definitely on the food. I decided to try a few items from their menu, and I was pleasantly surprised.
The fried chicken I ordered had been fried multiple times and kept in a holding cabinet, which resulted in a slightly greasy texture. However, the BBQ Donner and chips were absolutely delicious. The star of the show, though, was the chicken fillet burger and wrap. The crispy chicken fillet had a mildly spicy coating that added a nice kick without being overpowering. The flavors were well-balanced, and the taste was exceptional.
Cod City may not be a fancy establishment, but it's definitely a place worth visiting if you're in the mood for a quick bite or craving some indulgent comfort food. The affordable prices make it even more appealing in today's era of rising costs. Whether you're looking for a satisfying meal or simply want to try some Halal options, Cod City delivers on both fronts.
Overall, I would rate Cod City with four out of five stars. While the atmosphere and fried chicken could use some improvement, the exceptional taste and affordable prices of their dishes make it a worthy spot to satisfy...
Read moreWhat a con! If I could give Gamal's 0 stars I would. I went on 05/09 to eat here and ordered two chicken salads which were priced at £3.50 in store. When I paid I handed over a £10 note expecting to get change back however was handed nothing - when I questioned this I was told the price stated on the menu was wrong and the salad actually costs £5 each. Strange as I had ordered this before 3 weeks prior and was charged £3.50... I asked whether all prices are wrong then and was told 'no, only the salad'. This shop blatantly makes up the prices as they go along, charging an additional £1.50 per salad! I feel completely ripped off, all that arrived was half a chicken breast cut up and a handful of lettuce, cabbage, onion with a couple of tomatoes. I even had to ask for sauce!!! Avoid eating here at all costs. The tables were dirty, the staff were sat around in the kitchens eating/drinking food themselves and the wait to even get your overpriced food was ridiculous. Will never be returning and will advise others to not visit Gamal's either. Staff need to get some manners and stop ripping off...
