If you're looking for a reasonably-priced eat out in Birmingham for Japanese food Sushi Corner is a great option. I've been to some truly overprices sushi restaurants in Brum. A lot of sushi restaurants tend to give you extremely small portions so we ordered several items off the menu. We now have tomorrow's lunch. The portions are sure to leave you and your wallet full, and they have an extremely diverse menu. We didnt ask for any menu alterations but the waitress (whos name i didnt catch, apologies) made sure to ask us beforehand.
Kobocha Pumpkin: good, came in earlier as a starter of sorts and the tonkatsu sauce was nice. Empress Veggie rolls: tasty, not sure what it was wrapped in - not carrot or radish it felt like rice paper? either way a nice change from nori if youre looking for something different.
Pumpkin and Tofu bento Miso soup: surprisingly big bowl very crisp and refreshing (no tofu though) Firecracker cauliflour: Really good - well balanced not greasy at all and not oversauced. Miso aubergine fried strips: Felt a bit greasy (but by this point I'd had about 2 full meals worth of food), couldnt really taste the miso in them (which again may have been because id already had the soup), although they were quite thin stips so may have just absorbed a lot of the oil. Rice: fragrant and fresh on its own which helped balance out the aubergine and cauliflour very well. Fried Gyoza: im not a huge fan of gyoza as i find the steamed kind can have a sticky consistency and the fried kind can feel greasy, but this was not heavy in the slightest. Yasai Goma Wakame salad: the (sesame?) sauce used was nice. Sometimes wakame salads can feel like theyve been artificially sweetened or else feel very mucilaginous but this felt very cool and juicy.
I think I would have preferred to have my miso soup come closer to the end of the meal as most of the yasai bento was fried food and it was light enough that it would have helped prevent in inevitable food coma we fell into. The wakame salad came towards the end and was very fresh and cooling but I would have liked to wash it down with the miso instead.
Can't really comment on the atmosphere on a regular day as it was raining profusely when we went and anyone with sense would have ordered from home, but were given ample time to look at the menu and our orders were taken as soon as we were ready - no waiting around.
Some of the lights are blue for some reason which has had an odd effect on the pictures - didnt think to use flash until quite far into my meal.
Will be back again soon to try the rest of the...
Read moreTook my son to Sushi Corner for his birthday (he loves sushi!). It was a Sunday evening, so it was pretty quiet - one other group came in while we were there, but otherwise we had the place to ourselves.
The waitress was friendly and attentive, but without rushing us - gave us plenty of time to choose drinks and look over the menu.
We had a couple of starters - some bao buns, firecracker chicken wings, prawn gyoza, and some chips (for our slightly fussy 4 year old!).
The bao buns were light and fluffy, the breadcrumbs on the chicken lovely and crispy, and the katsu sauce rich and tangy The gyoza were really nice - crisp on the outside, and the filling was juicy and tender. The firecracker wings were really tasty and moreish, my only criticism would be they could do with being a bit spicier!
For mains, our youngest had the bao buns and chips, my partner (who isn't a fan of sushi) chose a chicken ramen, and my son and I decided to share a sushi boat (why not?!).
We went for the largest "3 person" option; usually 3 person means 2 people with a decent appetite..., however we were suitably impressed, and this was definitely a 3 person job - we had plenty left over, which the restaurant kindly packaged up for us, and my son got to have sushi for dinner the next day too!
As for the sushi itself, it was delicious; firm, sweet and perfectly seasoned rice, fresh good quality fish, and a nice selection, including sashimi, several different rolls, crispy rolls, octopus, salmon and prawn nigri, a variety of maki... I'm probably forgetting some!
Whilst I didn't try the ramen myself, my partner certainly enjoyed it.
The only (minor) negative thing I could say about the experience was that a few delivery drivers came in & out while we were dining. It was a very cold evening, and a couple of times the door was left open, meaning it got a little chilly at times - perhaps an automatic closer on the door would be worth investing in :)
In summary, I'd highly recommend Sushi Corner, the staff were great (the chef came over personally to check if we were enjoying the food), the atmosphere was nice and relaxed, and the food was delicious, good quality, and...
Read moreWe waited 15 minutes⌚ for our order to be taken, even though there were only three other tables, one of which had six people. It seemed like there was only one waitress running around, trying to manage all the tables.🤔
For starters, which we shared between two people, we ordered: Kaarage Chicken Bites 🍗 Chicken Gyozas (you get five in one portion) 🥟 Katsu Chicken Bao Buns (you get two in one portion). Unfortunately, they had run out of bao buns and could only give us one, but they offered it for free because of this. 👏🏽
The Kaarage Chicken Bites were definitely a highlight—full of flavor😍 and marinated from the inside out! Highly recommend! 🤤🤤🤤
The Gyozas were lovely—crispy and packed with flavor! 🥟😍
For the main, I had Wok-Fried Noodles with Teriyaki Sauce🍜. I chose chicken and soba noodles. The flavor was amazing, and I appreciated that there were minimal onions, unlike other places that use them to bulk up the dish👌🏽. The chicken pieces were grilled to perfection! However, it could have used a bit more chicken and a stronger teriyaki flavor 👍🏽
None of the food was oily, which was a big plus💯
One of the chefs 👨🏽🍳 personally came to apologize for the long wait, explaining that they had received a large delivery order that kept them busy 👏🏽. I saw the delivery in the end, and it was indeed quite large 🫣.
The music choices were a bit questionable 🤔🤔🤔 for an Asian restaurant. Some songs were heavy metal, and it wasn't great having someone screaming in your ear while you eat🫨. There was a moment when the music was turned off completely, which made the atmosphere feel a bit odd🍃. While some songs were okay, I think a more oriental vibe would suit the restaurant better. 🎵
Overall, I would recommend trying Sushi Corner, and I'll definitely be back at some point! 🍣👌🏽👍🏽💯
