If you’ve been out in Moseley, it’s highly likely you’ve been to the iconic Cuban Embassy (Bulls Head). It is the oldest pub in the village dating back to the 1700s. Now it’s a little slice of Havana serving up rum based cocktails and live cuban music each weekend 🇨🇺 🍹 💃🏽
We went on Saturday afternoon for bottomless brunch (2hrs). Choose bottomless Prosecco or Cuba Libres, two small plates and a side for £35 per person.
We ordered: 🍔 Iberian Burger 🐟 Cod and Pepper Croquettes 🇪🇸Spanish Chorizo 🍗 Garlic Chicken Thighs 🍟 Sweet Potato Fries 🧄 Garlic Flatbread with cheese
The food is provided by Santi’s Kitchen and we loved every bite 👌🏽
The garlic chicken thighs were sensational. We were mopping up every last ounce of the sauce with the garlic flatbread; we nearly wore a hole into the plate 😆 The cod and pepper croquettes were generously filled with fish, rather than filled out with potato. They were delicately seasoned so the fish could shine and we wanted a bucket full. The burger looked pretty basic, but then we took a bite…the Manchego was nutty and slightly sweet, perfectly complimenting the salty Serrano ham. It tasted homemade and authentic.
It was quiet during our visit, so even though I hate the phrase because people are saying it about everything, I’m going to say it…the venue might be well known, but the brunch is a 💎 hidden gem 💎 It was fantastic for us too as Cuba Libres are a much more appealing option than sugary cocktails. They were also super accommodating and let my mum have vodka instead of rum ☺️ it’s the little touches. We were having such a lovely time we stayed for a few extra hours and enjoyed some banana...
Read moreAs of tonight (Wed 27th March) the bar is now open again after a refit. Space is much improved as the bar is now repositioned along a side wall and no longer creating a jam in front of the entrance. I've uploaded pictures of new bar, which has a faded Cuban hotel feel, as does the redecorated bar and live music space upstairs. Same friendly staff, same Latin vibe, same cool drinks but better looking bar.
This bar offers something different for the jaded pub go-er especially at the weekend. They have done a good job creating an exciting atmosphere that is part Boho Moseley and part Cuban. A massive choice of rum (120 I think), plenty of tropical cocktails and a live band playing from 10pm upstairs at the weekend all adds to the Latin American feel. Staff are smart in black downstairs and tropical shirts upstairs. During the week days there is food here at certain times and a musician also playing downstairs. Had a very good night here last night. The crowd is an eclectic mix of people from all over (I noticed quite a lot of different languages) all ages (although our group probably doubled the average age in the room!). Any age group is going to feel welcome here. The condition of the bar isn't pristine (that's part of the Cuban feel perhaps?) and yes they serve a lot of cocktails and it all takes time. My advice is get friendly with the bar staff, get your orders in early and then get in to the Caribbean mood. If you're still stressed, go upstairs and dance. Where else in Moseley can you dance to a live band playing Latin and reggae music? You can honestly forget where...
Read moreWe went for a Caribbean carvery for Father’s Day we were a group of 5 , the service was ok, not the warmest , we had to wait for rice , so we had about a 15 min wait .
The menu is confusing its £20 per person with a £5pp deposit which goes towards drinks . Not sure this was good value as I didn’t want two soft drinks and having one doesn’t feel fair. Also I thought dessert was included which would have made it a much better deal.
The food was extremely bland , lacked flavour and isn’t a good representation of Caribbean food 🙈 very watered down even more than Turtle bay. The Yorkie’s we're hard and roast potatoes were chewy.
Portion size for £20 I was expecting more , if I had a one Al Carte main and sides in a resturant I would have had a better portion so feels extremely over priced.
The idea is great one but the execution is poor , £20 would have been a fair price if the flavour was authentic , portion size increased and it included a dessert a scoop of ice cream would have been fine .
For £25pp including drinks I would recommend going elsewhere until...
