Went here recently with couple of friends and my wife for a reunion get together as they live in Bristol. That wanted a Sunday roast and we originally booked The Plough but it didn't offer much choices for vegan or vegetarians. My wife and I thought it would be great to get a vegan/vegetarian roast as an alternative so we came here instead. Reviews were similar star rating. As soon as I saw it was a pub restaurant I had a feeling the food wouldn't be great, just regular pub grub. I was right. I've eaten roasts plenty times and it didn't match up to any of them. My friends felt the same even though they got the beef roast and we the vegan one. The service was slow, after taking our order, 45mins of waiting later we were asked if we would like to order, we replied we ordered ages ago and waiting for the food. The wait would have been worth it, if the food was on point, sadly not. The vegan nut roast had cranberries so had sweetness, it came with roasted parsnip and roasted carrots (both sweet), red cabbage sauté (more sweet), a couple pieces regular roasted potato, 2 what seemed home made Yorkshire puds with vegan gravy. Overall there was no balance of savory and sweet. There should have been a lot more savoury elements. My experience of pub food hasn't changed and I doubt it will, there are far better places to eat, even if it means paying a bit more. We were drawn by the reviews and the photos of the place showed promise. Not sure what kind of food the reviewers eat daily but won't be going back. PS: If you have dog allergies or dog fears, avoid, as customers are allowed to bring their dogs into the venue and sit at the restaurant tables. The most strangest thing I've seen. Never been to any restaurant that allows that. I understand they are trying to be homely and welcoming but consider the other customers that aren't into dogs and prefer to eat peacefully without dogs barking inside, like we did. Just strange.

Overall, we thought this was a lovely place to have a Sunday roast for the family. We each ordered something different but felt the sharing platter was the most value. I had the beef roast but was a bit disappointed that I had only 2 small slices of beef, however the Yorkshire pudding was generously sized even if it were a bit overcooked. Our roast potatoes weren't crispy but they still tasted nice. The roast root veggies were done nicely and cabbage was a nice a touch. The gravy/jus could be a bit richer but thought it was just the right amount. The chicken was the best out of the lot, very well cooked and seasoned and generous. The pork belly was delicious and our second favourite. The steak and chips could do with some substantial greens other than a watercress garnish like peas or green beans or broccoli to make it a complete meal. The service was good and the staff very attentive. The atmosphere was also lovely to eat in. We generally enjoyed our lunch and would recommend it to others on a 7/10 score.

Myself and my partner had the pork belly which was delicious. The pork mash and veg were perfect. Pork melted in the mouth! The only thing that wasn’t as amazing was the pork scratching as it was a bit hard but we gave it to our dogs who were very appreciative. Service was fantastic, both at the bar and to the table, the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. They gave us water and treats for the dogs which were gratefully received. Our friends had sausage and mash and the pie and were also very happy with their meals. It was warm and cosy which was great to come into on such a cold frosty day, with a really cosy ambiance and they also had great music playing low in the background which we enjoyed. We stayed for a few hours after lunch as we were so comfortable and were happy to see cafe petron was available so enjoyed a nice shot as well as our ciders and ales. Love this pub it’s iconic and the heart of Moseley.

TERRIBLE SERVICE + DISAPPOINTING SUNDAY ROAST

Last night i visited this restaurant with a friend. We were looking for a nice Sunday roast in Mosely. Neither of us had been to this restaurant but thought that we would give it a go. Upon arrival a waitress walked passed us like we were invisible with no instruction or even a greeting. So we took it upon ourselves to find a table, the one we found was near to the back of the restaurant right by the open fire (nice touch).

The table wasn't clean but it was the only available table, we sat there for 25 mins without anyone coming over. At which point i went up to the bar and asked for somebody to come over, when the waitress finally arrived she did not offer to clean the table, again i had to ask.

When the roast arrived the presentation was lovely, but that is where it stopped. The chicken was tasteless and dry, the Yorkshire pudding was soft and looked like more of a pancake. The veg again was tasteless and the pigs in blankets were burnt. The extra gravey that we had ordered never turned up. My friend managed to stomach some of the chicken however my plate was virtually untouched.

We then sat with the dirty unfinished plates for a further 15 mins at which point i went to the toilet. When the waitress came to clear the plates my friend told her that i had not enjoyed my food at which point she decided to come find me in the toilet and ask what the issue was, i found this to be an extreme invasion of privacy. I'm not sure why she couldn't just wait until i got back to the table? Also, would it not have been more beneficial for you to check how the meal was whilst we were still eating? Anyway - I informed her that i did not enjoy the meal and she asked if i wanted to order anything else. i declined.

Once back at the table, she asked if we wanted any deserts. Again we declined - and that was the last time we saw her. Another 15 mins passed and i went and asked for the bill at which point a different waitress brought it over, to my surprise my meal was still on the bill even though i had not eaten any of it.

Another 20 mins passed, nobody came over to take payment despite the debit card being placed on top of the bill in fully view. So yet again I had to take it upon myself to go over to the bar to ask if someone could take our payment.

When i got to the bar i also asked to speak to the manager - turns out the barman was the manager. I explained all that we had been through that evening and he was incredibly empathetic and offered to come and talk with my and my friend at the table. He apologised a number of times and seemed genuinely disappointed in the performance of his team - he also removed my food from the bill and gave us a % off the final amount. The manager was amazing, very friendly and warm. Its a real shame that the rest of the team are not.

I have been a waitress for 6 years and i would never treat any customer the way i was treated last night at the fighting cocks. I will not be revisiting which is a real shame because the manager was...

Really loved the pub, I want to start off with that. The acoustics weren't great and it was expensive, but I like it a lot, and the pub quiz is brilliant. But there is a complaint that I have to get off my chest because the menu has to change. The """"nachos""" are absolutely dreadful. It's impossible to mess up nachos and yet in the pursuit to be posh, the chef has created an incredibly bland and genuinely disgusting dish. The """tortilla chips""" were effectively dried, empty giant samosas that had no salt or flavour to them. Then there was NO SALSA (which, as we know is the tortilla chip's most loyal sidekick). There was a tiny amount of bland chopped tomatoes but that won't cut it. There was also no melted cheese. It did have a little cream and a lot of Guacamole, which I hate, which I do conceed is supposed to be a component of nachos. And there were a couple of jalapenos, which did the heavy-lifting flavour-wise. I'm the most mellow man you'll ever meet, I've never been a Karen before in my life, on the night, I suffered in silence, but the service was quite slow, so I was STARVING, so to be served something that not only bore no relation to what I ordered, but also tasted really bad, pissed me off big time. I'd give it a 1/10: the 2nd worst pub meal I've ever had after 0/10 curry at The Boat and Railway in Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove, which I've had twice and is repulsive. So yeah, please take it off the menu, serve proper nachos, or at the very least, if you're a customer: DO NOT ORDER IT. Otherwise, smashing pub, I'll definitely...
