The food was great at Lewis’s. However. I have never in my life felt so picked on by a manager who is working in a café. I attended Lewis’s for brunch with my brother and partner. The manager greeted us and showed us to the table, explained about ordering on the app etc. His attitude was really abrupt and annoyed, almost like he found our presence in his café a total nuisance. It was the strangest thing I’ve ever experienced as a customer.
We ordered coffees and a breakfast and made a note on our order for one breakfast to substitute eggs for bacon and the other to substitute the tomato for a hash brown. Quite simple. The manager came over with the receipt of order and was questioning what we had put on the note and kept raising his voice. I didn’t totally understand what he was saying due to the fact he was wearing a mask, it was loud in the café and the way he was talking seemed quite aggressive so I just agreed with whatever he was saying in the hope he would leave our table. When the breakfast came, mine didn’t have eggs on it. I was happy to just leave it as clearly that was what he had said when he came over but my brother asked the waitress if she could get some eggs as there had been a misunderstanding. That’s all it was - a misunderstanding. However. The manager came back over and was so aggressive! He directed everything he was saying at me in a really rude and aggressive way, saying I had made the mistake and he demanded I opened the app and paid for the bacon they had added to my plate. It was all such a shambles over a really silly misunderstanding but what I want to highlight is that it’s completely unacceptable for a man to be aggressive to a young woman who is a customer in his cafe and has done absolutely nothing wrong. I apologised for my mistake and said it was fine let’s just leave it. He shouted at my brother and told him to stop raising his voice - when every time he had come over to our table to confront us about something he was the one who was raising his voice and being totally aggressive. It’s an absolutely disgusting way to treat customers. I will never ever return to Lewis’s.
And I want to highlight that this entire situation was so horrible that I burst into tears and had to go to the bathroom to sort myself out. I’ve never felt attacked like that by a member of staff when being in the position of a...
Read moreWe have been regulars of this place since it opened maybe 6 years ago? And have enjoyed it through all its stages, from a deli (we still miss the smoked hummus!), to a quirky little cafe, to a now larger European styled restaurant which serves the most amazing veggie breakfasts.
This place has served as a backdrop to our romance, from our early weekend dates as we ambled around the village, to the place we had weekly brunches as a newly wed couple, and now a place we always visit when we get all nostalgic for Moseley and come back, as we no longer live within walking distance.
I last visited Lewis's 6 months ago heavily pregnant and badly craving the French toast which had been taken off the menu. I had an enjoyable meal but was upset by an error (I blame the hormones) and the staff were incredibly kind about the whole thing and I was even offered some complimentary items to compensate which I felt was above and beyond amazing service. Lewis himself came to speak to us and is in my opinion everything a cafe owner should be, easily accessible, and down to earth.
Fast forward 6 months and I visited today with my husband and 3 month old baby, a inquisitive and temperamental little lady and we were apprehensive with this being our first attempt to merge back with civilisation after her arrival. We needn't have worried as Lewis's is perfect for new mums, the staff were very kind and made a fuss of my baby which I appreciated and the food was as always to its high standard. I finally got to have my French toast and it was worth the wait! We spent a very enjoyable hour in there today.
Methinks this will continue to be a backdrop to our lives and long may...
Read moreThis place has gone drastically downhill. Firstly, they sat us down after a 10 minute wait (fair enough) but, we were told the food would be 20 minutes. After being told we couldn’t alter our extremely overpriced breakfast which is £9.50, it arrived 45 minutes later. In addition, along came the HP Brown sauce - supposedly a local cafe supporting local businesses? The sooner this place realises that their complacency is prevalent, the better. The breakfast was of average quality but it was rushed and bland. We mentioned this to the staff member at the end; we asked her if the meat was from a different supplier - it wasn’t great and, that Lewis’s now serves the same brown sauce as WEATHERSPOONS and Lewis’s breakfast is three times the cost. They once served lovely, LOCAL sauces but the staff member said it was ‘too expensive’ and the meat supplier too. What’s happened at Lewis’s is that they see traffic through there door and want to focus on profitability. Fair enough, but the quality has slipped and the service is terrible.
We previously went to the evening offering they host and that is poor too - Damascena is over the road, go there!
Overall, people will start to notice this and hopefully management will too. The breakfasts here were once fantastic but now they are not desirable at all. We as local customers will not be...
