The Silver Hake Fish Bar — Restaurant in Birmingham

Sent my family to get cod and chips a few weeks ago. Masha Allah the brother (owner I believe?) was very nice. Threw in extras when my brother told him we’d driven quite some way to try their food.

The chips were soft melt in the mouth hunks of potatoes. Delicious! Unfortunately the fish was so greasy, it was not only visible but the batter was oozing oil. I did see a 2/3 reviews saying this. But I overlooked it, thinking it must be due to their personal preference. But they were right. It could just have happened on these occasions, like if the temperature of the oil isn’t hot enough when frying food, it can seep into it, especially something so porous like batter. Whatever the reason, I tried to hide my disappointment from my family since I was the one who’d recommended it. So did my best to eat it but ended up feeling nauseous. In the end we all agreed the food was oily. And when I reheated the leftover chips the next day, oil was dripping out of them too. It wasn’t obvious when they were fresh. So sadly, it’s been a let down. And despite the brother being very nice, sorry to say but we won’t be going...

The silver Hake was rated a 4.7..we wanted to put it to the test. It was our first time visiting yesterday. As you enter, surprisingly it is quite large inside.To the right is a light blue fish 🐠 design, so you really feel like your in a restaurant. There is an American style Diner seating on the right side as you enter.. The clear visual display of food on offer to the left is very good.. Large cod and chips is £7.80 is what we ordered with curry sauce. Very pleasant greeting and staff. Very clean inside. We also bought a tin of lilt each which is to the right as you enter before the seating area. We were asked to sit down and wait. The fish was cooked fresh, wow!! Excellent.. The fish and chips is presented in an oblong box.. Very nice👌 We didn't eat inside. It gets very busy in here too.

After going in here Saturday lunchtime I was shocked to be told there was no donner meat and the chicken donner wasn't ready yet (although the other person behind the counter was slicing it up and giving it to his mate to eat). I had a large bag of "lasts nights" chips a dry fishcake and a very greasy battered sausage. I asked for salt on everything but the young kid behind the counter was too busy telling me how tired he is and questioning why I am eating chips in the daytime because he doesn't, he forgot to put any on.
