Absolutely top pub! Cracking little pub. We were visiting my daughter who is at Uni there. We booked a table and went Sunday lunch time. Roast dinner is the only food they serve on Sunday. The pub is one of those little gems you find, you know what I mean! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and at least one local sitting on a stall with a pint on the bar. The best! When we booked a table, (definitely recommend booking a table as it is a popular little pup!) they asked you what meat you want (a choice of one or two meats) I chose chicken and beef, my wife and daughter chose just chicken. When we arrived the bar lady directed us to our table and after getting drinks we waited for our food to arrive. After a short wait, the food arrived. On the plate the meat portions are very generous and came with roast potatoes and parsnips and a separate bowl of veg. The food was excellent, a really good Sunday roast. If I was being really really picky, I would have preferred a few more pieces of parsnips as I only got one piece. Like I said I'm being really picky. The meal isnt over priced and definitely worth it. Our daughter has told us they do other foods like burgers etc throughout the week. We plan to return on another occasion to taste the other food they do there. Apparently, the burger is to die for. Can't wait...
Read moreThe Happy Man is probably the most loved local pub by people who work for Royal Holloway. As such, you can almost always find a RHUL staff member in here on any given week-day lunchtime.
While the decor in the Happy Man does look a little tired now (I don't think its been decorated in the last 6 years or so) the atmosphere is this little Englefield Pub is absolutely perfect for its size and location. The staff are always friendly, and on the right day you'll be greeted by the Land Lord (Dave) or his trusty sidekick (Stephan).
The food in this pub is certainly a reason to visit here. The Thai Green Curry is lovely, and for such a small pub their menu is fairly diverse. Everything I have so far eaten in here has been lovely, and the prices are reasonable given the area and proximity to London / Royal Holloway.
Another reason to visit this little gem is the selection of Real Ale. Two ales are offered on tap, with the ale changing a few times throughout the week. The Happy Man is also the home of the local Real Ale Festival, giving you the opportunity to try a pint from any of twelve guest ales.
If you're ever at Royal Holloway for a business function or Graduation, I would highly recommend finding this little hideaway just the other...
Read moreThese times are difficult with social distancing but The Happy Man manages this by having a covered garden. We came to eat as a family group and all enjoyed the food that was cooked well, my rare, rump steak was nice and tender, no stringy gristle and cooked to perfection.
We noticed that the two bars were occupied by the regulars, who appeared mostly to be friendly builders, the garden was empty when we arrived but started to be occupied by student groups shortly after, so quite a cross section.
The staff were all super friendly and helpful, especially with my mother-in-law, who has advanced dementia.
The food is competitively priced and I must say that I've paid more elsewhere for food that doesn't meet the good standards here.
Definitely...
