We went to The Quay's restaurant for dinner last night - a last minute booking, which they were very accommodating of, so that was great. The staff were lovely and the service very good too.
I should emphasise that the food here really is absolutely delicious - we had the trio of pork and beef short rib. Both were really tasty, well-seasoned, beautifully presented. This is definitely elevated pub grub and you should go and try it.
HOWEVER. The reason for this 3 star review is because, frankly, no one likes to be ripped off, and they seriously need to rethink their portion sizes.
The pork dish was just about right, but the beef short rib (one rib, with a small amount of meat, a small quenelle of mash and a substantial portion of kale) while really flavoursome, was not enough. There were maybe 5 small mouthfuls of meat on the plate.
The starter of salmon gravadlax we'd had beforehand was, again, super tiny. Didn't mind too much about the size given it was only a starter.
But what really ground my gears was the ridiculously priced and sized sticky toffee pudding - which we felt we had to order because we were still hungry.
The pudding itself, again, was really delicious, lovely date / molasses flavour. But it was miniscule - for £8.50. To add insult to injury, it was an additional £1.50 for ice cream (approximately a teaspoon's worth). To start with, what weirdo doesn't want ice cream with their STP? Surely an essential requirement! But whatever - you do you. £8.50 is already quite a lot to charge for STP (which is quite cheap to make in bulk). So to charge a tenner for such a teeny tiny portion of a classic pub dessert is, frankly, rather.... miserly?
Anyway, despite this rant, I'd give the restaurant another go, because the food is bloody good. There just isn't enough of it - so make sure you order the bread for the table.
But come on, The Quay. 'Tis the season to be jolly (not to scrimp...
Read moreSunday 27th April 25. Silver wedding anniversary We had a sit down roast for 47 people to celebrate with us The food was absolutely amazing, very hot, cooked to perfection, good selection of vegetables good roast potatoes and Yorkshire........ delicious 😋 The service was spot on and never waited for anything, a big shout out to all that were involved in making our day very memorable and special. We had pimms on arrival and loads of fruit in the jugs which was lovely, and on a day that the weather was very sunny this was a good choice I would throughly recommend the Quay for an event or even a meal , the food and drink has always been first class. Thanks again for making our day Bob and...
Read moreThis place has undergone several changes over the years, and we really hope that the current owners can make it work well. The rooms have been nicely decorated and appointed. The first floor ones are the largest with the upper ones having slightly low ceilings. The staff are very helpful when they are there, but be aware this isn't a hotel, its a posh b&b so there's no staff available overnight. The breakfasts are very good and all cooked to order, so be patient. Its located in the town, so ideal for being near shops and entertainment, but its on what seems to be a main thoroughfare. If you have a front room, be prepared for early...
