Told the waitress the Tom Yum soup was salty and flavourless albeit at the end of the meal as to not spoil the occasion before finishing. Only tried a bit and left the rest but received no apology or offer of a refund. Her response was to say "ok" and no concern for the fact it was handed back 2/3rds full. When the bill was received I was surprised to be charged for the soup after bringing it to their attention that it wasn't nice.
Manager (guy in his 50s who I suspect is the owner) eventually came over and gave me what I can only describe as a "death stare" after we refused to pay for the soup and just said "what"?? to our faces. At that point things turned very sour as I wasn't happy at being spoken to in such a confrontational way and made him aware of this. Even so he carried on arguing with me and failed to take any responsibility for the food that had been served. The restaurant was empty as it was almost closing time so I assume he thought he could get away with being rude to us! I pointed out there had been no apology to which he replied "do you want me to grovel"? The level of disrespect was off the scale.
We got treated like we were scamming them even though it was the cheapest item we bought. Couldn't believe he felt it was acceptable to react in this way to a customer who was still paying over £50, just because I wasnt happy paying for a tasteless soup. Thai food and Tom Yum should be bursting with flavour, galangal, chilli, lemongrass etc. All I could taste was salty water with a tiny hint of tom yum flavour. Basically they'd not used enough paste and tried compensating with salt whether by mistake or to save money who knows...?
If you pay for your meal expect an ok service/experience. If however you decide to complain about something, be prepared to get spoken to like a piece of dirt! Was basically made to feel I don't know what Thai food should taste like (despite the fact I've eaten Thai food hundreds of times). "That's your opinion...." I was told. Perhaps not though as there's another review on here critical of the Tom Yum soup.
Despite the soup, I was prepared to eat there again until the manager behaved like that as I did enjoy the Som Tam. He needs to go back to customer service school. The restaurant lost two customers today because of the manager's attitude. Real smart for the sake of a £7 soup that genuinely was...
Read moreVisited here in the past and the food and service were good.
However I visited again recently with a group of 8, one of whom had special dietary requirements. Whilst the waitress was very helpful in going through the menu and trying to work out if there might be something they could prepare to meet the necessary requirements, they were unable to work anything out.
With the expectation that we will not always find a restaurant to cater for such dietary requirements, she had brought a small amount of food with her. We politely asked if it would be ok if she might be able to eat her own food with us, on the basis that she would be buying her drinks and the restaurant and we were to have 7 full paying seats for food & drink.
The understanding waitress kindly went to ask the manager, at which point things went somewhat downhill. The (gentleman we believe to be) the manager came over to our table to very bluntly tell us that he would not allow this. When asked, he offered no reasoning, no apology, and showed no understanding for the situation. At this point we decided to leave for an alternate nearby restaurant who could meet our requirements, and as I explained why we were leaving to the manager he simply stated "quite understandable".
I understand that businesses such as restaurants need policies in place to cover the costs of owning and maintaining their premises, however if this was a business decision it was an incredibly poor one, as they have turned away 7 customers paying for food and 8 paying for drinks, which is certainly profitable custom in what was quite a quiet restaurant. I would also understand if the decision was based on legislation (e.g. health & safety) or for the comfort of other customers. However any of these reasons would have been easy to explain to us and easy for us to understand at the time.
The low rating is simply with respect to the lack of care shown by the manager towards his customers. I strongly recommend taking the 2 minute walk around the corner to Suhko Thai who were much more appreciative of our business and also do...
Read moreI went with a group of 8 people, one of whom was a coeliac (gluten free) and had an allergy to meat. She is aware that there are limited places she can eat, but she explained her requirements to the waitress who was very helpful going through the menu, dish by dish, to see if there was anything she could have. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything (as to be expected), but she always carries bits of food with her just in case. We asked if it would be possible for her to be able to eat her own food (carrot sticks and humus), while the seven of us ordered food, and the waitress said she had to check with her manager.
He came over and simply said that no, she could not do that, and walked away. There was no explanation, no understanding, and he was rather rude in the way he said it, which made us feel quite unwelcome. We would have understood if there was a policy, or health and safety issues, but none were offered as an explanation.
We contacted another Thai restaurant nearby who were more than happy for us to go there, and for my friend to sit with us and eat her own food. While we left the restaurant, we explained to the manager that we were going somewhere else where we could eat together, to which he responded: "That's understandable, bye."
My star is awarded to the waitress who was golden - thank you for being so understanding. I'd give her all five if we didn't feel so let down by the rude manager.
I highly recommend Sukho Thai; delicious food and a wonderful family run business and they're only...
