We visited The Royal Saffron on Saturday the 19th August after being regular visitors to the Thaal. We had booked a table for 6PM for two people. When we arrived, we were asked to take a seat and were then taken to our table – they didn’t ask if we had booked so no idea how they know who is due when.
We were given menus and asked if we wanted poppadom’s. The menu looked like quite good value. When the popedoms came, they tasted like the nights before as they were quite stale. We waited a short while for our order to be taken whilst orders were being taken for tables that came in after us. No biggie as we weren’t in a rush.
The pickle tray should be renamed the sauce tray as there were no pickles in it apart from the smallest of bowls with enough lime pickle for a small mouthful, we asked for more and was given the same bowl back with none added?
After we had placed our order, we were asked another three times if our order had been taken. Our starters came and they were ok. I had chicken tikka which was nice, but my partner had lamb chops which were undercooked and not rendered down enough. For my main I ordered chicken bhuna which lacked any flavour and just tasted like a curry out of a jar. My partner had a chicken karahi with spinach which he said tasted like a meat stew and not a curry, this was after asking for extra garlic. The spinach was very odd, it was in small solid tubes which looked more like spring onions. We then waited about twenty minutes for someone to collect our plates etc (I’d usually take the leftovers home but it was that tasteless we left a full curry between us), after waiting and waiting we just went to the till and paid the bill. They asked if it was good, and I just said ‘it was ok’ as I’m not one to create a scene as people have different opinions and I like to give places another try and also try different items on the menu.
When we came to pay the bill it was £53.30 which at first glance seemed expensive for two of us when its take your own drinks. I asked to take the bill away, but the guy said that I couldn’t as they must keep them all. I just settled the bill as there were customers behind waiting to be seated. We got home and checked the menu on the Facebook page and we had been overcharged by £11.35 as our bill should have been £41.95 this is an overcharge of 27% of our bill!
I called the restaurant and explained, they said that we would have to go back down to sort it out. I went back down on Monday (21/08) and they found our receipt in the pile. First of all, it was added up wrong…. When I added it up on my phone it came to £47. Then upon further inspection they had charged us £10.95 for chicken tikka starter which is £4.50 and claimed that the person who had took the order had recorded it as a main course £10.95. Why would we have 1 starter between 2 people and 3 mains? Then on the bill it had both £6.95 and £4.50 wrote next to poppadom and pickle tray. We had four poppadoms = £4 and a pickle tray which is £2.95…. an overcharge of £4.50. We went round in circles for about twenty minutes adding it back up and going back and forth and it was getting quite embarrassing. We are genuine people and would not have wasted our time driving back down if it was correct and were made out to be liars until we pointed everything out (it was more of a principal type of thing). We were given the money back in cash despite paying on card and weren’t offered an apology! Had this have been resolved quickly and in an apologetic manner then A) I wouldn’t be writing this review and B) we might have tried it again living locally. To summarise below average food, disorganised and don’t trust the bill that you are given…… check each and every line. Will not...
Read moreWe came to this restaurant on the 22nd of November 2024. I must say from the second we arrived to the second we left we were treated with absalute dignity kindness and a very warm atmosphere. On arriving they realised I was blind and when we came up to the steps, the gentleman sunny Was telling me how many steps they were and he even pulled my chair out for me when we arrived at the table. Sunny was so helpful and supportive throughout the entire evening and he could not have been more helpful at all. He was a wonderful man to have met And he definitely went above and beyond by explaining where things were positioned on the table for me. The food here is first class I have been to many Indian restaurants and never had food as good as this. My brother and I had the mixed starter for two and I had one of the house specials. The food was cooked to perfection and you could tell it was all home-made as well because the samosas were rustically shaped and not perfectly formed like you would get with frozen ones. I will also say that the people that brought the hot food to your table were amazing. I only wish I got their names to mention here When my food arrived. The gentleman explained where the dish was and put my serving spoon into it for me and showed me exactly where things were he was so very very helpful and explaining how hot things were because the dishes did come bubbling. At the end of our meal we were given a Wipe to clean our hands up with and sunny again went above and beyond by opening the rapper before handing the wipe to me. This was really kind of him to think about the fact that these rappers could be tricky to open. When we were leaving the restaurant Sunny again went above and beyond by holding the doors open for us and when we thanked him for his service and gave him a £5 tip. He was very gracious and even called me brother which really made me feel very very special indeed because people of the Indian origin only use that are very rare occasions for people who they do feel I like family. I will say that they do also offer a takeaway service. It’s a shame it’s not a delivery service as well because I would order from here all the time. Will I be back here again, most definitely whenever I can get a lift to the premises I will be back in a heartbeat. Now for the disclaimer I have not been incentivised or asked to do this review and I’m not in anywhere related with the business other than the fact that I am a customer who has had a phenomenal experience here. Therefore, the words I have said are from the heart and are a genuine review of my superb experience. Please give this restaurant your custom, you will not be disappointed. The restaurant is also very accessible for people in wheelchairs and there is lots of space between the tables so you don’t feel crammed in. A wonderful traditional restaurant of a very...
Read moreI went yesterday Tuesday so wasn't busy at all only 4 cars in car park I ordered chicken Tikka and chicken nambali starters and chicken keema balti, meat ragistani curry the most complex curry it said that should be rich and dark in colour also family garlic nann! The waiter could not understand us properly or communicate and someone behind till had to answer our request!!? Firstly my chicken Tikka starter had onions most of which were burnt to charcoal to a crisp all black ; the nambali wasn't too bad, the mains come and looked identical in colour and taste down to the red peppers etc mine was a balti not a ragastani the most complex of all curry's lol my daughter also found few chunks of meat in her chicken and keema adding to the fact they give us the same type of curry! Which hardly contained any meat The family Naan was small and wafer thin and very pale was not cooked in a tandoor and looked and tasted cash and carry bought! I made them aware my starter was mostly charcoal and currys where the same! both baltis and the fact there was meat in my daughters but got no real response or sorry from them. I am a food guide on Google and this was my first visit when they wasn't busy and was something wrong with starter main and Naan
Further to your reply I brought this to your attention while in restaurant and nothing was done about it the waiter showed you my burnt starter and I made u aware I was unhappy with my curry which was no different from balti I also ordered and you just said u would ask him? Presumably the chef, I heard nothing back from you like u was not bothered and saying feedback is important and would try amend this. You didn't do anything while I was in restaurant and made u aware, maybe if u offered a discount on next visit and communicate this before we left we may of given u another try to redeem yourself? After telling you I heard nothing back didn't get the starter I was unhappy with replaced or not charged for, if this is how u treat unhappy customers I doubt they will come back for u to redeem yourself. If you would like to offer a discount for a return visit let me know and if u redeem yourself from our first visit I will delete my negative feedback with positive feedback as I believe every body deserves a second chance to put things right, I will leave this in your...
