Just left this pub. Very disappointing. Firstly our food was delivered to our table and after a minute we realised no one was going to bring cutlery and condiments, I have no issues helping myself to cutlery etc but staff would normally advise you where they are located as we weren't advised where to get cutlery, sauces etc we assumed they were bringing them. So we went searching for them as they were in a different area to where we were. We ordered 3 burgers, sweet potatoe fries and chicken wings. Burgers were undercooked, very red. Bar was very busy so 1 member of our party went to the hatch and asked the chef if he could cook them further. He was quite rude and dismissive said no as the food had been tasted by us. I went to the bar staff as I was not happy. I showed him the burger and said I had not been asked how I wanted it cooked and was informed that all burgers are cooked medium and it states this on the menu. I returned to my table and reread the menu and there is a small box easily missed stating this. I feel this could be highlighted maybe in red etc. As it happens our burgers did not comply with their own statement. We asked a nember of staff for boxes and advised them we would have to bring the burgers home and cook them ourselves. A customer focused establishment at this point would be embarrased and offer a solution. None was forthcoming, they gave us boxes though. We went home and cooked the burgers, they were peppery/spicy, lots of grizzle, not tasty at all, ended up in the bin.
Salad was good. Colesaw was good The chicken wings and fries were nice. Nice pub inside. Pity...
Read moreIncredible. Have been three times now and this most recent visit was the best yet.
At the time of writing there was a 3-course menu for £10, three options for each course. All courses were superb, especially the halumi salad which was a really full and fresh proper salad with a very nice mustard dressing (no mayo, yesss). The main was a rather excellent risotto* - not chesey with lots of rocket. All courses were generous, well presented and really very nice. How it only cost £10 I don't know.
Prices for ales are also reasonable and, rather nicely, displayed actually on the pumps. Good selection of local real ales + a rather nice real lager on tap. If I were to nitpick I'd say they were served a with a bit too much froth on top.
The pub was surprisingly busy for a wednesday, but only a lively hum, no horrid music. There is an outside space for the summer and a wood burning stove for the winter. Most excellent all round, and well worth the short walk from the Cambridge Blue.
not actually the set main, but they kindly swapped in a smaller** version of one of the other veggie options as otherwise it was salad followed by salad. ** not...
Read moreThe Alex is a great place to have a nice, laid-back drink with a small group of friends. The atmosphere is lovely and lively, but never feels too frenetic, and the variety of beers and Ciders is wide and always changing (this week's rhubarb cider really takes the cake, it's delish!) Also, definitely try the food. As far as pub food goes, the food here never disappoints. Whether is a daring "Porky pig" burger with skin on fries, a classic bangers and mash, or the super creamy mac'n'cheese, you're always granted to leave with a fully satisfied belly. And don't get me started on the staff! Outstanding friendly service on the bar from Megan and Dave, and even the cook, Josie, is a lively presence (as well as a darn great cook). Come to the Alex, it is more than worth it. If you're lucky you might also meet a sweet dog...
