1st VISIT: WHAT WE HAD FOR MON – FRI LUNCH (3 courses for £17.95): Smoked mackerel pate, beetroot, pickled radish & sourdough [£6.75]; VEGAN Roast squash & red pepper hummus, radish, watercress & sourdough [£5.75]; Supreme Chicken with gnocchi, pancetta and sage sauce [£13.25]; VEGAN Roast cauliflower, leek & potato cake, spiced tomato sauce, kale [£10.50]; Winter Pavlova, Vanilla Cream, Mixed Berries, Poached Pear and Meringue [£6.00]; VEGAN Chocolate and Orange Tarte topped with Mango Sorbet [£6.00]
The hummus starter was simple yet delicious as the creamy hummus was balanced with fresh radish and pickled red onions, great on the crusty and chewy sourdough! My mum found her smoked mackerel pate scrumptious too, smoky and umami.
For the mains, the roast cauliflower was nicely charred but could have use more seasoning or some marinade along with the pieces of kale. Still, as it was served on a heaping pool of flavourful spiced sauce and tasty leek potato cake – it made for a hearty and scrumptious dish. My mum found her creamy gnocchi tasty too but it was a bit too rich and buttery for her.
Unfortunately, the desserts were just passable. The chocolate torte was rich and chocolaty but the quite dry and hard. The Pavlova was a bit lacking to my mum too, wasn’t baked long enough as the crust wasn’t crisp enough and the inside wasn’t as light and airy.
2nd VISIT: WHAT WE HAD FOR SUNDAY ROAST: Sunday Roast of 28 day aged beef topside [£15.00]; Vegan Sunday Roast of Butternut squash, sage and onion stuffing [£12.25]; Sticky Toffee Pudding topped with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream [£6.00]; Pint of Adnams Mosaic Beer [£5.00]
My friend found her roast tasty – well roasted trimmings, good Yorkshire and flavourful gravy. The beef was tender but the cut she was served was quite fibrous and she had to cutaway a fair bit of it. I was very disappointed with my Vegan Roast as it was essentially just the trimmings with a ball of stuffing – not worth my 12quid at all. I suppose it is true to the description on the menu, but it just doesn’t justify the price. The waitress could’ve given me a heads up too seeing that I ordered that as my meal. It really shouldn’t be listed as a vegan roast, maybe as extra sides for the table. For dessert, my friend loved her thick and fudgy sticky toffee pudding (which they are known for too apparently!). On both visits, the staff were friendly and provided good service. The pub is spacious with a cosy and darling atmosphere, definitely opt to sit at the beautiful outdoor terrace during Summer!
Fresh food (the menu changes according to seasonal produce), lovely vegan options, decent portions, friendly service and warm & welcoming atmosphere – I can’t see why I won’t be back for more. However, there is definitely room for improvement for the food, and I would love them offer a PROPER vegan Sunday roast! Especially since I’ve yet to come across on in...
Read moreWe booked for 6 people for Sunday lunch for a family occasion at 1pm, and thought 2 hours would be adequate - we love the Petersfield, for it's atmosphere, excellent food options and general vibe, but were disappointed that it was at no point made clear that a 2 hr booking is considered by the Petersfield to be 1.5hrs - they'd written 1:15 on the table reservation, and the next booker (Charlotte!) was written on the other side for 2:45, cutting our time short by 30mins.
As the Petersfield is always very busy on a Sunday, especially in the run up to Christmas, service was not as quick as normal and we waited 40mins for starters. By the time we'd received our main courses (at 2:10) we only had 35mins to eat a full roast. When mains were cleared we were told there was no time for dessert and handed the bill instead.
Family members who travelled from London particularly didn't appreciate being shoved through service, and with two of the group (myself included) who work in catering and hospitality, we really felt disappointed that Petersfield failed to make at all clear that a 2 hour booking was in their eyes, only 1.5 hrs.
I'd really like to eat again at the Petersfield, but I'd recommend large groups book a longer amount of time, book over the phone and clarify exactly what time you're getting for your booking to avoid the disappointing...
Read moreWe visited The Petersfield for a Sunday roast and it absolutely exceeded all expectations. From start to finish, everything was spot on, warm, friendly service, a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and a roast dinner that’s easily one of the best I’ve had in a long time. The food was clearly made with real care and skill with excellent presentation. I never usually write reviews, however I felt like something had to be said. The meat was beautifully cooked, tender, flavourful, and carved to generous portions. The roast potatoes were golden and crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, exactly how they should be. The Yorkshire pudding was enormous and perfectly risen, soaking up the delicious gravy like a dream. The vegetables were fresh, seasonal, and cooked to perfection and full of flavour. A special mention has to go to Justin, the head chef – you can genuinely taste the passion and talent in every bite. His attention to detail and ability to bring traditional comfort food to life is second to none. The service was brilliant throughout – attentive, welcoming, and genuinely friendly, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for a proper Sunday roast in a cosy, stylish setting, The Petersfield is an absolute must. We’ll definitely be back soon – and...
