The pub has just reopened after redecoration. Sadly the improvements stoped with the new paint and refurbished toilets. The barman was very rude. We ordered food before 6.30 when the dining room was not even half full and it took over an hour to arrive (we were lucky, the table next to us had to wait for 2 hours) when it did 3 out of the 4 meals were wrong. Doubled up on the chicken in the hunters chicken, only got one piece and it was tiny and unpleasant, the peas were like bullets and extremely shrivelled, they looked like they had been dug out of the back of the freezer having been languishing there for several years. The fish and chips were ordered with baked beans, we got peas. The fish was nicely cooked and hot but no flavour. A medium rare steak was not only well done but tough and full of gristle. Even a staff member commented how over done it was. They couldn’t even get the drinks order correct, and barman complained when this was pointed out. An orange juice and lemonade had the cap of the orange juice floating among the ice. Mentioned to the manager as she was passing and she shrugged it off. We have been regularly in the past but will not be going again.
We understand it is the first night to reopen but the staff etc. were the same and they have only been closed for a couple of weeks. It’s not like they needed to be trained etc. and it was regularly as...
Read moreWe arrived at The Castle at approx 5pm on a Friday afternoon and the car park was almost full, but that's really because this is a popular pub, in a central location. My wife and I found an available table in the conservatory area, make sure to take note of your table number and return to the bar to place your food order and get your drinks. The food arrived amazingly quickly, it was piping hot and tasty and all the staff were polite and pleasant. Adjacent tables were being cleaned as we ate our food and it was nice to see pub staff clean the tables so thoroughly, we've been to some places where there's a random squirt of cleaning fluid somewhere near the table and a token swipe of the cloth over a small area of table. This is an ideal place for decent pub food, it's got a good atmosphere and front projectors and large screen tv's for live sport. It's has improved considerably and as long as they can hang on to their current staff it's worth a visit. The only reason I didn't award 5 stars was because the blinds in the conservatory area needed a really good clean but not really much to worry about. Thanks for...
Read moreMy wife met 12 other friends for a reunion meal at the Castle 12.30pm on Thursday 11th of July2019. They were seated in the conservatory. It was a hot day and they asked for the doors to be opened but because of one selfish women who was already in there said no as she did not want to sit in a draft so they were kept shut. There was a light warm southerly breeze that day. So no fear of a draft. They all sat there in stifling heat. No fans no ventilation. Only when this selfish women got up and left did they open the doors. My wife did not enjoy her meal and when she stood up her clothes had stuck to her with sweat. By this time she had a splitting headache and felt sick. This is how I found her later at home only the sick feeling had eased a little. I can't vouch for the other 12 except apparently they were all moaning about how hot it was in there. I would ask, do you look after one person with an unfounded problem and let 13 others suffer in what my wife said was like torture. She said, it was like eating our dinner in...
