Spice Of India — Restaurant in Charnwood

I booked this restaurant for my sons 18th birthday after lots of reassurance from the owners sister Hina that everything would go smoothly and not to worry about a thing, i even visited the place personally before booking as I have never eaten here before just to make sure and was fooled into confirming my booking of 25 guests. Firstly the table wasn't even set up, then it took ages for the glasses to arrive so no-one could have a drink as we had ordered jugs of soft drinks which came in a timely manner but no good to us as no glasses, then there was a big deal about which glasses to give us! The bar man then dropped the whole tray glasses on my mother in laws head and smashed a few on the floor. The dhal was split all over my chair which i wasn't sitting on at the time thank god but splashed all over one of the guests jacket. When we went to the bar to tell Hina she made us out that we were lying as she couldn't see the stain thats because I had wiped it down as much as I could. We waited ages for the food even though I had ordered a set meal so there would be no delay, the veg starter was so chilli just awful and i am Asian so I am used to my food being chilli, the veg mains had no salt in one of the dishes couldn't tell the two dishes apart they were just mush. They brought two bowls of dhal out for 7 veggies!!! and not enough rice. All in all i spent 5 hours in the restaurant which i have never done before because the service was so slow. To top it all the chef was serving us our meals!!!! no waiters/ress. When we went to pay the bill they insisted we had 27 guests which we didn't and they charged the kids who are under 15 full price absolute terrible. Wish I went somewhere else this experience was so awful and is going to stay with me for the rest of my life. Had it not been my sons birthday I would have complained but I didn't want to make a scene in front of my guests or in years to come for my son to tell me that thats all he remembers from his birthday the complaints. The lady Matre 'D' is very knowledgeable about the food, helpful and friendly! She's worked here for years, knows everything about the food, so ask ! All the staff are polite and friendly. We had 4 Popadoms and the pickle tray with extra red onion mix as pre starter, Popadoms are fresh and crispy. Big size portions of the pickle tray! First time ever we've actually left some ! Then we ordered onion bhaji starter, with small bit of salad and lemon slice. These come as 2 per portion! slighter smaller than a tennis ball size ! Hence we shared starter. Then I had chicken Tikka masala ( the best I've ever tasted) and I've eaten Indian food all around the UK , Jay had Hariyali chicken, it's marinated in their in house green masala and cooked in a green spicy herb sauce, coriander is a key factor. You can ask for extra chilli or garlic in any dish. We had mushroom rice between us, and a portion of chapati. ( Comes as two pieces) I took a third of the rice and a good portion of my masala home! Came here for a family birthday, there was a large number of us booked in far in advance so they were aware. We waited over 2 hours for our food to come out, so much so the kids were falling asleep without any dinner. The staff more so the lady in charge was very rude and inconsiderate not only to us but also noted on how she spoke to her staff. I know very well if someone spoke to my children the way she did to her staff I would be walking out. The food came out luke warm after numerous complaints and half of the orders were missing. It seems they cannot function for a big party as they seemed to of prioritised other customers and left us. 1st and last time for us not a good reception at all.

** for the record only 2 of the party came back as they had another booking for another birthday the next day. A pre ordered menu was never asked of us and in hindsight maybe you should manage it better. Diabolical to say the least.
