I used to spend hours and hours in Gordon's about 35 years ago when I worked for Rock Steady Security. They were one of the few restaurants in Edinburgh which was open long into the wee small hours. At that time, the food was good, simple Italian fayre at reasonable prices.. a great deal all round. The years have passed and my wife, little boy and I decided to return for a quick lunch last Saturday. My little boy suggested that we had a look at the menu in the window before we went in and he was right. At the time I just said to him ' We don't need to check Luke, daddy used to come here all the time'.How In would regret this. The two blond waitresses on duty were just about competent although I got annoyed that I had to get my own starters off the counter myself because one waitress was chatting to her pals and the other one was chatting up one of the chefs. The food was bang on average, certainly nothing remarkable but certainly not bad either. Italian food, asd we all know, is the cheapest of all genres to make, which is why Italian food has to be absolutely spectacular if the restaurant is going to charge cheekily high prices as Italian meals cost literally pennies to make. To keep this review short, the final bill was £87 for 2 starters, 3 bowls of spag bol, 2 orange juice's and 2 coffees. £15 for a small plate of spaghetti bolognaise with lumpy mince??... Absolutely ridiculous and about 2x what better Italian restaurants would charge for a better meal. A salutary warning to check the prices in the window before you sit down for a meal. I'll...
Read moreVisited this restaurant one night and it was pretty quiet. For a restaurant with prime location on the Royal Mile, I would have expected it to be busier, especially on bank holiday weekend. There were two other tables occupied and we were invited to sit anywhere we wanted. It's a odd space arrangement, the kitchen is at the door which provides a narrow eating area along side it or else you venture to the back where there is more space. The room temperature is a bit crazy here too, it was nice and cosy at the wall, but there was a cool draft down the centre of the space. So we moved early on to find a cosier table before ordering.
I ordered the ham, spicy pepperoni, onion and mushroom pizza and the my friend, a pasta (forgot what exactly, but in the menu is stated "go on give it a try")! The pizza arrived and was a good size, but sadly the base was cooked underneath, but the top was still soggy. Flavour wise, it was good, much better that my companions over salty pasta dish. I wasn't all that impressed and the interior is basic and dated. The restaurant is dependant on tourist who don't know better. Expected more from a restaurant on Royal Mile, there are better Italian restaurants out there... Go a bit further a field and got to La...
Read moreWe visited Gordon’s Trattoria on 2nd January 2023. We were very disappointed from the food quality especially pizza, the atmosphere (tiny spaces) and the service. Too small and tiny restaurant with smelly toilet and kitchen.
Food was very disappointed. We were a table of 8 and because there is no space for 8 people we sat in 2 different tables of 4. Waitresses got our order. One table receives food with wrong pizza. The other table receives food after 20 mins from the first table. When we asked the bill, a 10% optional service charge was added which we didn’t want to pay as waitresses were not smiley, and never said sorry for delay, or wrong pizza that was served. The manager or waitress asked for the reason why I hadn’t paid the whole bill with service included (17£) and she asked me to pay it. I said because I didn’t get what I deserved and she looked away and said ok ok.
You should learn how to be professionals and listen to customers what they have to say before you say ok ok and bye. Being polite brings you only positivity.
If I could rate -5 I would trust me. I paid 180£ for 8 people only main courses and you should respect that we chose you to dine. We’re guests and you should be more welcoming, polite and smiley...
