We were excited to see this new restaurant in Newington and keen to give it a try.
Firstly, the big positive was that the food was verging on excellent!
I had the fish pakora, which was very nicely done (very delicately battered fish pieces) and the chicken pakora was also very well received.
The chicken main courses we had were also very good. The tikka pieces were nicely charred and had a great flavour. Also, big shout out for the pashwari naan! Probably the best we've ever had...
My only criticism would be the lamb main dish I had. And the criticism isn't against the flavour of the dish itself (I had the Maithi karahi), which again was very good, but of the lamb itself. The meat simply wasn't good enough. It hadn't been cooked long enough and was a bit tough to eat. Now I'm not saying it was inedible or anything, just that I love lamb curry normally and look forward to that falling apart, melt in the mouth quality it normally has. Sadly this was lacking here.
So unfortunately, I'd have to recommend avoiding the lamb.
Otherwise, it's a nice place with decent decor - particularly liked the wall with the picture of the Lahore food street. The atmosphere was maybe lacking a bit. I know it's maybe ubiquitous but some gentle volume, piped music would definitely add to the place.
The service was decent, although we did wait a very long time to get our drinks, which seemed odd as it wasn't overly busy and there did seem to be enough staff. I'm not sure if they were waiting to bring them when the food was ready...
Overall I think this place should do well due to the quality of the food (please though, stew the lamb for longer!) and the nice interior decor. Definitely worth...
Read moreI live in the U.S. and I know that South Asian food in the UK tends to be much better than in the U.S., but still, this place blew my mind away. I’ve had South Asian food many times in and around London, and this restaurant (apparently newly opened) in Edinburgh serves the best south Asian food I’ve ever had in my life. The food can be very spicy, sometimes without warning on the menu, so please make sure you can handle the spice level of authentic south Asian cuisine. Some of the menu items can be difficult to understand if you’re not raised in a south Asian family. I ordered the lamb chop (which comes in two sizes: the appetizer size contains 3 pieces, and the main size has 6 pieces; the flavor is amazing); the Paya (this one is a red soup/stew-like dish of lamb trotters, and comes with fresh ginger and cilantro on top; if you like fresh ginger and cilantro you’d love this dish); and lastly the Lamb Karahi (this one feels like a drier version of the flavor of Paya except with lamb cubes and the sauce is more curry based with tomato, ginger, cilantro, and lots of spices!) Anyway the food is absolutely to die for and I highly recommend if you love spicy authentic South...
