We arrived at the distillery 25 minutes late and asked if we could still join the tour. The staff in the bar was kind enough to ask the tour operators if that was acceptable and give us our first taster. Then Michael, who was one of the tour guides, accompanied us to the room where the tour started, and in the meantime, I told him that we arrived late because of a fractured toe. He told us there were only 2 other people apart from us. When we entered the room, Marina, the other tour guide, greeted us by asking where we were from. My partner said that she was from here, and Marina insisted about where "originally" from? When my partner said here, Glasgow, she turned to me and asked. I said İstanbul and she made a racist comment about "oh that's the Turkish time then" and said that was a joke and carried on with her introduction speech, talking about the retired delivery car which was on the display. She made another "joke" saying something like Glaswegiens shouted at the car, so it was taken off the service. I felt these remarks were not kind. At some point she asked if we would like more gin to taste and turned towards me, then I said "maybe but without racist comments please" she got defensive and said "Come on man, it was a joke and I'm French here. You were half an hour late" and she could have said something about Glaswegiens as well (which she did). I think this was outright racist, unapologetic, abusive behaviour trying to shame us for being late. I would have accepted if they refused us attending in the first place, but these racist jokes are no go. The gin and the distillery was cool, but the racist jokes Marina made were...
Read moreI’d booked this tour about a month in advance of our trip to Scotland, I was very much looking forward to it. Fortunately it met and surpassed my expectations. I’d never tried Pickering’s Gin before, it’s not very widely distributed where I live in Indiana, USA. But I wanted to tour there based on the fact it’s the first new gin distillery in Edinburgh in 150 years. We arrived and were greeted with a G&T, then walked into the distillery with our guide Victoria. She gave us a very thorough and entertaining history of gin and how Pickering’s came into being. It’s a great story and my hat is off to the two founders and the rest of the staff. We ended the tour with a tasting of the 3 standard gins produced there. Each had its own character and made a very difficult decision on which to buy and bring home with me. I’m looking forward to going back to the US to start spreading the Gospel of...
Read moreWe rather spontaneously booked the Peacocktail Tour, like less than one hour before it started, and that turned out to be a slight problem. 🙈
We were supposed to be picked up in front of the Summerhall building at 4:20pm and in the email they unapologeticly told us thay they would not wait for latecomers.
So we were there at 4:20 sharp. By 4:30 we asked at the distillery and were told that the guide might run a little late and we should wait. Ten minutes later, still nothing. We asked yet again and after some minor turmoil it turned out that they simply didn't check for new reservations in time.
But after that was all sorted out, we had a great time! The guide was knowledgeable and funny, we got to try some great gin and learned quite a few interesting things. I enjoyed it thoroughly despite not being much...
